WonderCon’s official history reads as follows:

WonderCon was started in 1987 in Oakland, California, as “The Wonderful World of Comics Convention.” The show was the brainchild of Bay Area comics retailer John Barrett, who called on a number of friends and associates to help realize his vision, including Bob Borden, Bryan Uhlenbrock, Rory Root, and Mike Friedrich. With the third year, “WonderCon” became the official name of the convention. The original show included all the classic comics convention features: an Exhibit Hall with dealers selling old and new comics and other items, programming, anime screenings, and games. In 2001, after the 15th event, then co-owners Mike Friedrich and Joe Field (another prominent Bay Area comic retailer) decided they could no longer devote the time needed to maintain the quality of the show they helped create. They contacted Comic-Con International in hopes that the organization could fold WonderCon into the Comic-Con family of conventions.

Comic-Con International took over the show in 2002 and moved it from Oakland to downtown San Francisco in 2003. After 15 years as a Bay Area event, WonderCon was forced to move to Anaheim in 2012, due to construction at its San Francisco home, the Moscone Center. Since 2012, the event—now called Comic-Con International Presents WonderCon Anaheim—has been held in southern California.

Updates from the Fear the Walking Dead WonderCon 2018 panel

We got a chance to check out the WonderCon 2018 panel for the upcoming fourth season of the AMC series Fear the Walking Dead. The panel was attended by Alycia Debnam-Carey, Danay Garcia, Colman Domingo, Lennie James (who is crossing over from The Walking Dead), and new cast members Garrett Dillahunt, Jenna Elfman and Maggie Grace, as well as the showrunners and Greg Nicotero.

We were told that everything is different this year. It’s a different situation and the relationships are different. Nicotero told us, “What’s exciting for me, I still can’t get over the fact that we’ve been doing this eight or nine years and we’re still coming up with stuff and surprising ourselves. There is some continuity between the two shows. Now that they live in the same universe. The walkers will be the one thing that is the most consistent. We really wanted to have consistency.”

Domingo talked about his character. “I’ve always said that Mr. Strand is a symbol of deconstructing capitalism… it’s complicated, why he does what he does. He was crumbling. Alicia showed up and he didn’t know what was going on. It’s offering a new possibility to be part of something like building a community. it’s not about him for the first time,” he said. “He’s testing out using his skills for the group survival.”

Debnam-Carey talked about Alicia this season. “She finally pushes back against being the golden child and being the strong one. She’s endured so much. She walked away at the end of season 3.” She talked about the big moment that showcased her being independent. “She’s become a leader in a sense, but we really get to see her find that. It’s a big development.”

Garcia said that her character is trying to find her path and that no one is really a villain in this series. Everyone is just trying to survive.

James joked about Morgan’s personality. “If he’s going to kill, he might as well kill everybody. If you’re not going to kill, then you shouldn’t kill anybody. I think one of the things that’s been really enjoyable about being on Fear, is exactly that. The lines do get blurred. Morgan’s existing… he’s not the buddy anymore. He’s now in a place where he has no history.” He said that Morgan can now decide who he wants to be. He also told the crowd that he’s still figuring things out.

Grace and the rest of the new characters couldn’t say much about their roles, though she said the cast couldn’t have been more gracious. “It’s terrifying to show up to a show of this caliber and jumping on board with not that much notice, and they were so welcoming and lovely.” She said of her character, “she is uniquely qualified to be a part of the apocalypse.”

Dillahunt didn’t reveal much about his character but said he’d been trying to get on the show for a while. Elfman said that one of her first scenes was a stunt and that she does as many as she can. She told everyone that she was nervous and that she spends a lot of time in epson salt baths between the stunts and the emotional scene work. She said that everyone in the show is dealing with trauma and that her character hadn’t dealt with it yet. She’s skittish, Elfman told us, and “she’s on the run.”

In season four of Fear the Walking Dead, we will see the world of Madison Clark (Kim Dickens) and her family through new eyes — the eyes of Morgan Jones (Lennie James), joining the story from the world of The Walking Dead. The characters’ immediate past mixes with an uncertain present of struggle and discovery as they meet new friends, foes, and threats. They fight for each other, against each other, and against a legion of the dead to somehow build an existence against the crushing pressure of lives coming apart. There will be darkness and light; terror and grace; the heroic, mercenary, and craven all crashing together towards a new reality.

Are you guys excited for the fourth season of Fear the Walking Dead? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

A Lost in Space Sneak Peek at WonderCon 2018

A Lost in Space Sneak peek at WonderCon 2018

We got a chance to attend the panel for the upcoming Netflix series Lost ion Space at WonderCon 2018. The panel included showrunner Zack Estrin and cast members including Toby Stephens, Molly Parker, Mina Sundwall, Ignacio Serricchio, Max Jenkins, Taylor Russell, and Parker Posey. The room was also treated to the entire first episode of the Netflix series!

Very mild spoilers here. In the episode, we get to meet the Robinson family, who are on a colonization ship that crash lands on a planet. It’s freezing and covered in snow, and Maureen (Parker) has broken her leg. They realize they’re going to freeze and Judy (Russell) tries to rescue something from the ship that has sunken in an almost frozen lake. She’s trapped.

To say much more than that would spoil things, but here is a bit more that we can tell you. Though the show begins with what just seems like disaster after disaster, it quickly becomes a story about a family and the origin of what has happened to the Earth to get them out into space. Unlike the original series, they’re not alone on the planet as they weren’t the only ship out there. We get to see some backstory, the flaws in each of the family members, and how they are just beginning to overcome it. We also see a certain robot meet a certain little boy and it’s absolutely beautiful. In fact, you’re going to want to keep the tissues close by for the end of the episode. There was a very loud sniffling in the audience during a certain scene. You’ll know which one we mean when you see it. We also get a very tantalizing introduction to Dr. Smith (Posey).

After the screening, we got a chance to hear from the cast. Stephens told us that a lot is going on under the surface for the family. He said, “I think what I like most about John… it’s a real family, a real modern family. He has faults. He’s not some ideal parent. He’s trying to be an ideal parent. that’s what I like… they’re all struggling to be better. I think one of the things that I connected with being a parent myself and being far from an ideal parent, trying to be better as a parent.”

Parker told us, “I love the original and I certainly loved the original Maureen. But it’s a different time with different gender dynamics. One of the things that I love about the show, all the girls and women in the show are really strong. There’s never a sense that they couldn’t do what any of the boys can do. It’s not even a question. It’s not a rah rah role playing thing… this show takes place 30 years in the future… hopefully by then we’ll be in a place where we’ve dealt with all that. Class and race and gender. It’s incredible to play a woman who as smart as she is, has all of these flaws…”

Jenkins said that he’d heard the quote “Danger Will Robinson.” He heard it from Family Guy. “I have big shoes to fill. We all do… we’re taking our own spin on it while keeping the same flavor.” He said that meeting the original Will Robinson (Bill Mumy) was a powerful experience and that they’re now lifelong friends.

Sundwall told the crowd that Penny is struggling with her place in family. “I definitely think… she’s the quick witted sarcastic middle child.” She said that Penny isn’t treated as the cute small one or the smart older one. “She’s a romantic soul in a science family. She feels kind of out of place. I definitely think that throughout the season she becomes more comfortable and strong within herself.”

Russell talked about the scene in the ice. “It definitely wasn’t a comfortable situation.” She said that she definitely had some anxiety filming it. They created an ice set in plastic and it was rough, as she had to climb in from the bottom and not move. She also spoke about Judy. “…having somebody that is written the way Judy is written, you have to rise up to the occasion in a lot of different ways. She’ made me much stronger as a person. She’s much stronger than me. It’s an honor for me to be represented the way she is.”

Serricchio wasn’t seen much in the episode, but he told us a bit about him. “He’s all about him right now. He’s got one goal to take care of himself. I’m excited for you guys to see how it all unfolds. He’s got very different values than the rest of the family. In time, hopefully there is a little bit of a lesson to be learned. Right now, it’s all about him.”

Posey said of her character, “I love Dr. Smith so much. I was so touched to get the call… I was obsessed with the show, I would wake up at 6am to watch the static on the TV  to see it turn to color [to watch the show].” She said she actually liked the show more than Star Trek. She said that getting to play the character was really touching for her.

A Netflix Original, Lost in Space stars Toby Stephens (Black SailsDie Another Day) as John Robinson, and Molly Parker (House of CardsDeadwood) as Maureen Robinson, the family’s parental leaders who are struggling with their estranged relationship in the midst of trying to keep their family safe. As the Robinson kids, Taylor Russell (Falling Skies) is the strong-willed and confident Judy, Mina Sundwall (Maggie’s PlanFreeheld) is the quick-witted and definitive middle-child Penny, and Max Jenkins (Sense8, Betrayal) is the curious and sensitive Will Robinson, the youngest and most vulnerable of the clan, who forms an unlikely and inexplicable bond with a sentient robotic alien being.

Are you guys excited for the reimagining of Lost in Space? Let us know your thoughts in the comments. The series premieres on Netflix on April 13, 2018.

Here's what we learned about Ready Player One at the WonderCon 2018 Warner Bros. panel

Here’s what we learned about Ready Player One at the WonderCon 2018 Warner Bros. panel

We got a chance to attend the WonderCon 2018 Warner Bros. panel, where we got a closer look at the upcoming Ready Player One, based on the book by Ernest Cline. Attending the panel were Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, Lena Waithe, Philip Zhao, Win Morisaki, book author Ernest Cline, and screenwriter Zak Penn.

Author Ernest Cline told the crowd that Steven Spielberg is part of his DNA and the DNA of the film. He said that his stories were an inspiration. The idea of downtrodden kids going off on an adventure was directly from that. He spoke about meeting Spielberg. “It was one of the biggest days of my life…when anyone goes to meet Steven…everyone just had a haircut and everyone is trembling.” He joked that he was Charlie Bucket with his golden ticket that day. He also said that the race scene was the first thing they spoke about.

Penn told the crowd that he and Cline knew each other from his documentary Atari Game Over. He said that the fact that he and Spielberg and Cline as the creator of the universe were working together and that that was incredibly helpful.

Morisaki had the crowd laughing when he told them that meeting Spielberg consisted of a hug. “I was so nervous. He was so warm. He was like my grandpa. Every morning he hugs us. We don’t hug each other in Japan. It was my first time to hug a director,” he said. He also said that his favorite part of filming was the craft services table where everyone gets their food for the day. He said they have nothing like it on movie sets in Japan and that’s how he knew he was in Hollywood.

Mendelsohn joked that he met Spielberg but that he was impressed with Mendelsohn. “The first time I met Steven was at a little French restaurant. He had a hard time looking at me for a long time… Lena said he was star struck… eventually he sort of relaxed enough to talk, then he made his offer. I said, ‘I’ll think about it and get back to you on that.’”

Waithe told the crowd that the first thing her character does is celebrate a good moment through a dance. “A freestyle dance, that was the first thing I had to do for Mr. Spielberg.” She said he gives very clear direction and allows you the space to find your character.

Cooke said that she was in her mocap suit with Mark Rylance, doing a scene. She said that she was trying to impress Spielberg, but he told her, “You’re going to have to go a bit bigger than that because we can’t see what you’re doing.”

Sheridan said that Spielberg doesn’t like rehearsal. When they were working on a scene, he told everyone to go home. He told Sheridan that he wanted him to do the John Travolta walk from Saturday Night Fever and pulled out his phone, turned on the music and made him do it.

Waithe, Sheridan and Cooke talked about doing mocap, saying that none of them had ever done it before. Waithe’s character is an eight-foot man with robot parts and they all said it was hard to get used to looking at the ball on top of her head instead of her eyes.

When asked about playing villains, Mendelsohn said, “The pay is better. when you’re playing a bad guy… the pay is just so much better if you’re willing to take on the responsibility of playing the bad guy, you just get paid so much more.”

Penn and Cline spoke about the changes from the book and not using too much Spielbergian reference material. Cline said, “Spielberg made it clear that he didn’t want to reference himself too much or make reference to his work.” He said they put in references though, when he wasn’t looking. “We would sneak things in. If he would catch them, he would remove them. But he didn’t catch all of them.”

They also said that George Lucas and Tom Cruise showed up on the set. Lucas apparently teased Spielberg about using digital cameras, and Cooke was especially nervous to meet Cruise. She joked that she blacked out, but that she was told that she bowed as though he were royalty.

Ready Player One stars Tye Sheridan (X-Men: ApocalypseMud), Olivia Cooke (Me and Earl and the Dying GirlBates Motel), Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One: A Star Wars StoryBloodline), Lena Waithe (Master of None), T.J. Miller (Deadpool), Philip Zhao, Win Morisaki, Hannah John-Kamen (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), with Simon Pegg (the Star Trek and Mission: Impossible movies) and Oscar winner Mark Rylance (Bridge of SpiesDunkirk).

Ready Player One opens in theaters on March 29, 2018. Are you guys excited for the film? Let us know in the comments.

Freeform previews the new series Siren at WonderCon 2018

WonderCon 2018 is in full swing and today we got a chance to check out the panel for the upcoming Freeform series Siren. The panel consisted of Eline Powell (Ryn), Alex Roe (Ben), Fola Evans-Akingbola (Maddie), Ian Verdun (Xander), Rena Owen (Helen), and Sibongile Mlambo (Donna), along with creator Eric Wald and showrunner Emily Whitesell.

We got to see a brand new clip from Siren where we see some marine biologists discussing what could be a new predator that ate half of a mako shark. Ben, one of them, drives home and sees Ryn on the road with no clothes. He takes her back and dresses her, but she can’t speak. She begins to sing a siren’s song to mesmerize him. When someone comes to the door, she escapes.

We see her running through the town and looking at the people who are celebrating Mermaid Days in the town. She runs into Helen, the town eccentric who recognizes who she is. Ben tries to catch her, but she runs off.

Wald said that the film Jaws was an early influence for him. He said that people think of it as a horror film, but it’s really the story of a small town. He said that every culture has mermaid myths, but that he wanted to flip the classic depiction on its head.

Whitesell also spoke about the things that brought the mermaids to the surface and that part of it was that the sea bed has been stripped and they’ve been forced closer to the surface.

Here's what we learned at the WonderCon 2018 panel for Siren

Powell said that the role isn’t glamourous, but that it is exciting. “Her hair doesn’t get brushed everyday,” she said. “She doesn’t have Flounder. It’s perhaps a bit different. If you had said I was going to play a mermaid when I was little, I would have imagined something different.” She said that the prosthetics in the beginning took six to seven hours and that it took three men to lift her into the tank. She explained that she doesn’t speak English yet and that she approached the role through expressions and movement. She also explained that Ryn approaches sexuality in a non-binary way. She sees souls and not bodies.

Donna is another mermaid who seems to be vicious. Miambo explained that she had to do a lot of stretching to stay calm. The ladies had to take lessons in holding their breaths. She also said the tank she’s in at the beginning of the series is warm like a jacuzzi.

Roe told us that “Ben has to do a lot of thinking because she’s human, but she’s also not human. I think that’s a good questions that raises in terms of interspecies relationships.” He said she’s vicious but that he’s drawn to her.

In the epic tale, the coastal town of Bristol Cove, known for its legend of once being home to mermaids, is turned upside down when a mysterious girl (Eline Powell) appears and begins wreaking havoc upon the small fishing town. Using their resources, marine biologists Ben (Alex Roe) and Maddie (Fola Evans-Akingbola) must work together to find out who and what drove this primal hunter of the deep sea to land, and are there more like her out there?

Siren is based on a story by Eric Wald and Dean White who both serve as executive producers. Emily Whitesell (Finding Carter) serves as showrunner and executive producer. Brad Luff, Nate Hopper and RD Robb also serve as executive producers.

Siren will premiere on International Mermaid Day, Thursday, March 29 (8:00 – 10:00 p.m. EDT/PDT). Are you guys excited for the new series Siren? Let us know in the comments.

What We Learned About Marvel's Cloak & Dagger at WonderCon

What we learned about Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger at WonderCon

The executive producers and cast of Freeform‘s highly-anticipated new original series Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger attended WonderCon on Friday, March 23, in Anaheim, California, where we got a special sneak peek at the premiere episode. We also chatted with Olivia Holt, who plays Tandy Bowen/Dagger, and Aubrey Joseph, who plays Tyrone Johnson/Cloak, executive producer and showrunner Joe Pokaski, Executive Vice President of Marvel Television and executive producer for the show Jeph Loeb, and Gina Prince-Bythewood, who directed the pilot.

Pokaski told us that the biggest challenge with the series was casting Tandy and Tyrone, and in finding teenagers who could actually act. Holt and Joseph were actually cast very close to the beginning of shooting. He also spoke about how Freeform was actually allowing them to go further than he expected. “They were fantastic from day one,” he said. “I was scared at first, not knowing them well enough, that they might ask us to curb some things or to pull back, but they were the exact opposite. When we started pushing stuff, we started asking if we could do some edgy things — we’re trying to tell the story of a young woman superhero, which we haven’t seen too much on TV, and a young black man who’s a superhero. They really allowed us to push the envelope and to tell a different story.”

Pokaski also spoke about the differences in origin story from the comics to the TV series: “Listen, I think the original stories were fantastic, but for the time, while they were a little progressive, they were a little bit sexist and racist once you got into it, for now. What we tried to do was deconstruct it and make it about Tandy and Tyrone, understand who they were. Jeph had the great idea of moving it down to New Orleans. I think New York is covered for superheroes. Hell’s Kitchen has got like six of them. It’s like four blocks of a neighborhood!”

Holt talked to us about getting the part. “Aubrey and I had a really amazing chemistry read, and I think that’s what made me feel so confident about what we brought into that room,” she said. “I got on a plane the next day and flew to New Orleans.” Joseph also talked about his biggest challenge in taking on the role. “We talked about it. It was kind of emotionally draining to a point. The material is so serious and so dark in some ways. But I feel like we kind of went into the situation prepared, you know? We know that what we’re doing is very important and it has a chance to impact a lot of young lives.” Holt added, “We wanted to do it justice. We’re tackling so many important topics…[what] I think this world needs right now is a certain amount of education about things that are happening in 2018. We also just want to impact and inspire people and move people.”

We asked Prince-Bythewood about the Tandy and Tyrone relationship: “I wanted to make sure they had chemistry, and that started with the casting. The casting process was really, really tough… it was three days before we were supposed to leave and we didn’t find them. People started getting willing to settle and the people that were on the table were 27, 28. They felt grown and it didn’t feel right for the show. Then Aubrey and Olivia walked in the door, and they had such great chops individually… it was exciting as a director to know that I get to build this relationship with them and they just dove in. They’re just two really damaged characters who find the one person in the world that they’re so connected with and maybe able to help.”

We asked Loeb about the possibility of crossovers with other shows in the future. He said, “You’re trying to get me in trouble so I’ll say hashtag it’s all connected,” he laughed. “I mean, look, when I say that, what I always find myself explaining to people is, of course it all takes place in the same universe, because we’re at Marvel. They’re heroes that generally, not always, but generally don’t wear capes and cowls. Generally we’re much more interested in the people themselves than we are in, oh, this guy can shoot lightning out of his eyes… to be able to control the dark and control the light as a metaphor for what it is like to be young, and what it’s like to get through a day, much less your life. Those were all things that were interesting to us. Now, are there opportunities because now The Runaways also live in that same kind of world? It certainly makes much more sense to me, but we’ll see what happens as we often say to everyone – it was certainly a much more easy thing for people to understand with The Defenders, is that we like people to get to know the characters in their first season. We don’t want it to become, oh, look who stopped by in order for you to watch the show. It has to be organic to the storytelling that we’re doing. We don’t ever want it to feel like, oh, Foggy Nelson just got off the bus. Great! We want to make sure that, if that’s going to happen, if we share, and there are always challenges when you’re not on the same network, that it’s appropriate for the story. It’s Marvel, so it’s all connected.”

After the interviews, we got a chance to see the pilot. It was a lot darker than one might expect from Freeform, though they’ve been moving in that direction. In it, we get a sense of where each of the characters is coming from. As it starts out, we find a young Tyrone hanging with some older kids and his older brother. They’re talking about stealing a car radio, and when his brother mentions that he’s scared, little Tyrone steals it for him. We don’t want to spoil anything, but it doesn’t go well, and Tyrone ends up in the water after an explosion happens behind him.

Young Tandy is in a ballet class and her father picks her up. It’s a rainy night and he’s on the phone talking about a project of his when they get into a car accident. The car ends up in the river after the very same explosion. Though they both appear about to die, they save each other, though we don’t see it.

Later on, as young adults, Tyrone is having trouble dealing with school and is trying to do everything right. He plays sports and is clearly a good student, but things aren’t going well for him, despite parents who are doing their best to help him. Tandy is busy living in a trailer park with an alcoholic mom and stealing things from rich guys who try to take her home. As you may have seen in the trailers and scenes that have been released from the pilot, they run into each other, literally, at a party in the woods. That’s all we’re going to give away, but needless to say, this first episode establishes the characters and the powers that are just beginning to manifest. We also get a sense of the connection between Tyrone and Tandy.
