The top 10 punk rock documentaries on Amazon Prime

Amazon Prime sure has a lot of punk rock-related documentaries. Some are great, some really aren’t. Deciding which ones to watch could take ages! That’s why we’ve decided to do the research for you.

All Dolled Up (2005)

All Dolled Up begins with footage of the New York Dolls pretending to be a group of gangsters called the Lipstick Killers. They’re certainly a moral threat. These boys swear, dress like trashy women, and scream when they should sing. “A cross between the Rolling Stones and Alice Cooper,” is how an old, conservative-looking newsreel describes the band. With their rough music, tough look, and wild audiences, these boys really were influential. Though the concert footage isn’t great, quality-wise, it’s still fascinating. Between the amusingly calm voice-overs and the historical interviews, this movie is pretty informative.

Looking For Johnny (2014)

Looking For Johnny is pretty depressing. From musician Johnny Thunders’ lonesome childhood to years of heroin addiction to a death-via-untreated cancer, his life wasn’t exactly cheerful. Looking For Johnny gives a good amount of backstory and family details thanks to his sister and bandmates. Some might say the personal angle is better than merely covering his career because it gives a more balanced picture of the man. Even for non-fans, it’s pretty interesting. Given that Thunders got his start playing with the New York Dolls, there’s also quite a bit of information regarding their career.

Gimme Danger (2016)

Gimme Danger is about the infamously wild band Iggy and the Stooges. It begins with a description of the band’s depressing, drug-addled demise. Then we hear the rest of the story in chronological order. It starts out sounding mythical, like a rock ‘n’ roll fairy tale. When the Stooges got together, they pooled everything, from money to food to ideas, like “true, nonpolitical communists.” This documentary is full of fascinating facts and little bits of trivia. Random clips from old movies and animated sequences bring the story to life. Iggy Pop himself narrates most of it, looking charmingly wasted. If you’re interested in the Stooges, this is the punk documentary for you.

The Damned: Don’t You Wish That We Were Dead (2015)

Most people haven’t heard of the Damned (Dave Vanian, Brian James, Captain Sensible, and Rat Scabies) because they never made it big. Still, they’re quite interesting. The Damned: Don’t You Wish That We Were Dead tells the band’s story, from their early days to their many reunions. Also, Captain Sensible has the most fabulous taste in clothing. At times, he looks like some sort of cuddly muppet with a human head and that signature red beret! There’s something beautifully childlike about the Damned. Perhaps that’s why they’ve lasted so long. Unlike many of their more cynical contemporaries, these guys actually seem pretty fun. Even if you aren’t too interested in punk documentaries this movie’s bound to cheer you up.

D.O.A.: A Right of Passage (1980)

Unlike some of the films listed here, D.O.A.: A Right of Passage doesn’t focus on a specific band. Instead, it’s about the punk-rock scene in 1970s England. It includes historical interviews with both prominent punk musicians and anti-punk conservatives. There’s tons rare concert footage, too. John “Johnny Rotten” Lydon looks like some sort of deranged, wasted, insane-asylum, pirate-parody of David Bowie. Poly Styrene sings and screams her way through concert after concert. Dozens of nameless fans flip off the camera. As a result, it’s perfect for people interested in studying the mannerisms, fashion, and personalities of mid-late 1970s British punk rock.

Salad Days (2014)

Like D.O.A., Salad Days focuses on an entire music scene. The scene in question? Washington D.C.’s world of hardcore punk. People like Ian MacKaye of Fugazi discuss the reggae-inspired group Bad Brains. Much is made of the community aspect. The rest of D.C. society didn’t exactly like them, so they all banded together and looked out for each other. This documentary also includes a lot of information regarding Dischord records, the Dischord house, and the early Straight Edge movement. It’s a good introduction to the D.C. hardcore scene for non-locals and newbies to the genre.

Who Killed Nancy? (2009)

Though Who Killed Nancy? isn’t exactly a music documentary, it’s still fascinating. There’s a lot of speculation regarding the death of Nancy Spungen, an extremely unpopular, undeniably annoying groupie who dated Sex Pistols’ bassist Sid Vicious. On Oct. 12, 1978, her boyfriend woke up and found her lying on the floor with a knife in her stomach. People say he killed her, though some (such as her own mother) believe otherwise. This documentary explores various theories, primarily that someone else killed her or that she committed suicide. Her death left Vicious extremely distraught. In fact, he intentionally overdosed a few months later. This film gives a fascinating picture of a mutually abusive couple and the decline of the original punk scene.

If It Ain’t Stiff (2007)

If It Ain’t Stiff tells the fascinating, colorful story of Stiff Records and their 1977 tour. There’s a lot of Elvis Costello. In fact, his hit single “Watching the Detectives” plays over the opening credits. The concert footage, though somewhat blurry, really adds to the overall feel. Unlike some of the others on this list, they actually filmed and released this in the 1970s. It doesn’t rely on half-mythologized memories. Though a bit more New Wave than Classic Punk, it’s still worth seeing.

Clockwork Orange County (2012)

London, New York City, and D.C. weren’t the only places with awesome punk-rock scenes. Orange County, California, isn’t just the setting of angsty teen sitcoms; it’s also the birthplace of the West Coast scene. This punk documentary includes interviews with Jello Biafra, Henry Rollins, and countless others. There’s also some really fantastic concert footage. Apparently, the scene’s primary club happened to be a place called “Cuckoo’s Nest.” Kids with fake IDs would show up to see Iggy Pop play, and things grew from there, like a wild, uncontrollable beast of a party. This documentary helps the audience really understand this fascinating era.

Punk in London (1977)

Punk in London is another historical documentary about the British punk scene. Unlike If It Ain’t Stiff, this one focuses on London. Though something of a second-rate D.O.A., Punk In London does include footage of the Clash, which is one of the best things about this film. It’s also always nice to see lesser known-bands onscreen.

The 10 Best Star Wars Moments

The 10 best Star Wars moments

Not too long ago (OK, it was in 1976), a book called Star Wars: From The Adventures of Luke Skywalker was released with the hopes of promoting a new movie in production. That movie was Star Wars. It became a series, a franchise, and a part of the everyday lives of millions of people. Four decades and eight films later, people still can’t get enough of the series. The films are a gateway to the novels, video games, toys, cons, shows, and enough content and merchandise to drown an entire fan base. Viewers have fallen in love with Star Wars‘ incredible characters and want to relive and repeat the illuminating, blindsiding, scandalous, or epic moments in the series. With a ninth film on the way, and the Force being with us, we decided to rank the top 10 best Star  Wars moments.

10.  Darth Maul Lights Up

Up until Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace, lightsabers were minimal in the movie’s plot. They appeared about as much as a sword in a Shakespeare comedy. In this Star Wars moment, the first prequel changed the game with hundreds of CGI droid fighters to deflect laser beams at. It also introduced Darth Maul, a being of few words with the double-sided lightsaber. Maul stands in front of Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi Wan holds out his weapon, instantly evening the odds and giving two Jedi knights a run for their money. It showed fans that lightsabers are customizable for function and aesthetic. After this, everyone wanted one.

9.  Darth Vader Force Chokes

“I find your lack of faith disturbing.” Star Wars owes much of its success to the original badass, Darth Vader. With that line, Vader not only emphasizes the importance of the Force, but also shows his power and ruthlessness, reasons he should be feared. It’s inferred that viewers don’t know much about the Force at that point in the series, especially if one watches them in the order they were made. The best Star Wars moments don’t always have explosions or whistles. Sometimes, it’s the little things. This scene had impact because it educates, shocks, and leaves fans wanting more.

8. Yoda Has a Lightsaber

I saw Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, opening night in 2002. It’s the only time I’ve ever been to the movies and the audience gave a standing ovation mid-film. Yoda, 900 years old, is shown in Episodes V and VI in a depressed, decrepit, isolated state, uttering that “there’s another…Skywalker,” before his body disappears. In Episode I, Yoda is shown as a prominent member of the Jedi Council, and that’s pretty much it.

Close to the end of Episode II, after an epic battle between dozens of Jedi knights and the droid army, Yoda has a face-to-face interaction with the film’s main antagonist, Count Dooku. After Dooku tries to best Yoda with force lightning and moving giant objects, he suggests a duel. Anyone who watched the films in either order (numerical or release) Episode III or Clone Wars might be confused or might wonder if another cast member is going to help this tiny old creature. Yet Yoda doesn’t reach for his lightsaber; he opens his robe and uses the Force to bring it into his hand. The battle is high-flying. Yoda flips, spins, and would have easily taken down Dooku had Aniken and Obi-Won not arrived to pretty much get in the way.

Squad Goals: The Best Star Wars Characters Of All Time

7. Order 66

Everyone loves a good betrayal. The most Game of Thrones-style moment of the franchise belongs to Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. It turns out that the massive clone army created by a Jedi for the Republic also had plans to destroy the Jedi. After the Emperor and Darth Vader defeat Mace Windu and most of the council, the Clone troopers shoot down their commanding Jedi. Obi-Wan barely escapes. A small number of other Jedi survived. Without this order, the Empire never would have risen to supremacy. It created the foundational conflict of the original trilogy and the new Star Wars films of this decade. This is why at the start of Episode IV, the Jedi are legend and the Force is a religion. It’s also why in Episode VII, Rey only knows the Jedi from fairytales.

6.  I Love You….I Know

Is Star Wars a love story? Before people were shipping Rey and Ren, they were stanning Han Solo and Princess Leia. Toward the end of Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, Han and Leia share a steamy kiss before being dragged apart from each other’s grasp. Leia, played by the iconic Carrie Fisher, utters, “I love you,” which takes a new viewer aback a bit after watching Han and Leia bicker for two films. Solo, played by the also iconic Harrison Ford, not to be outdone, responds with, “I know,” in one of the most Han Solo things one could say to such a grand gesture.

At the start of Episode VI, when Han is unfrozen, blind, and hears Leia’s voice, he echoes her sentiment: “I love you,” and Leia echoes his: “I know.”  Sure, their relationship is at a weird point and they are separated by the time Episode VII rolls around, and their demon spawn is kind of the worst, but their loving moments reveal a strong connection that could be felt throughout the Force.

5.   Strike Me Down

The first lightsaber duel is not long into Episode IV: A New Hope when Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader stand face to face. Anyone who watched the films in numerical order knows the history, the drama, and what’s at stake. Anyone who watched the films in the order they were made knows that Darth Vader was a former student of Obi-Wan’s, and that he is the bad guy that can use the Force to choke anyone that disagrees with him. The fact that it has weighed either way shows the brilliance of the film, and moments like this keep those who’ve seen every Star Wars film returning to them again and again. What struck audiences with this Star Wars moment was the lightsaber itself. Was it a solid or was it light? The audience knew that the lightsaber could cut through an arm (from the bar scene), but who knew that Obi-Wan would disappear upon being struck?

4.  Are The Jedi Extinct Now?

The Jedi, like gender, are a construct. Sometimes, you gotta burn it all down. In Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, everything fans have known about the Force and the Jedi order are turned upside down. In a moment that echoes Darth Vader and Obi-Wan’s “Strike me down” moment, Luke Skywalker has an encounter with his former student, Kylo Ren. Turns out Luke was protecting himself only to turn into dust and join Yoda and Obi-Wan as Force ghosts. Also, the Jedi texts are on fire.

This moment is perhaps the most polarizing of the series. On one hand, this is what needs to happen in order for the Skywalker line to be eradicated. If Anakin was created by the Sith out of nothing in order to bring balance to the Force, Rey is the Force’s response to that force. On the other hand, what did they do? With so many questions and so few people who know the ways of the Force left in the Galaxy, fans eagerly await to see this arc’s conclusion.

3.  Blowing up the Death Star

This was the Star Wars moment that thrilled the world. The rebel squadron faces a giant, moon-like weapon that can destroy stars. These scenes make audiences feel like they’re a part of the action, flying through space. The only way to do so is to get a tiny laser into a little hole. As rebels get shot down, it becomes clear that it’s up to Luke Skywalker to take it down, with no radar and listening to Obi-Wan’s force ghost. “Use the Force, Luke,” Obi-Wan says. He gets a little help from Han Solo whose appearance showed a change of heart. With no radar, Luke shoots. The Force was with him.

Many rebels pass, but Luke fends off Darth Vader and finally gets his lasers into the tiny opening. The explosion is still visually stunning to fans. Spacecraft-flying brought some of the purest joy to Star Wars fans. It’s inspired video games, spin-offs, and other work within the Expanded Universe.

More Star Wars Excitement: Star Wars VR Series Vader Immortal Trailer Released

2. No, I am your Father…*Breathes*

This was the moment that brought Greek-level drama to popular American cinema. All along, the most evil villain was the father of the heroic farm boy. In Episode V, in the middle of a lightsaber duel, Darth Vader tells Luke Skywalker that he is in fact, his father. Luke’s reaction is loud and full of emotion. He grapples with that anger, that identity crisis, and loses his hand before leaving the scene with his life.

Sure, Vader is German for “father,” and his name is literally, “Darth Father.” Yes, when they re-released the films theatrically in the ’90s, they showed this moment in the trailer. This Star Wars moment is the most repeated moment from the series because it is so iconic. Also, Vader’s breathing makes the moment ripe for parody.

1. The Cantina Scene

If you poll Star Wars fans and ask, “What is Star Wars about?” you will hear a number  of responses. Ultimately, the Star Wars films are about good versus evil and the moral struggles one faces in that tension. The films have given fans very clear depictions for “good,” and “evil,” but they have also depicted the moral gray areas. Maybe good people do bad things, or bad people do good ones. What is good, anyway?

Star Wars is also about taking people by surprise. The cantina scene in Episode IV is iconic on its own. There is so much creativity and precision in the scenery and the appearance of every alien in that bar. Obi-Wan has to slice off the arm of an alien that wanted to kill (and maybe have sex with) Luke. Droids aren’t allowed inside (a call back to The Clone War?)

They gang meets Han Solo, pilot of something called The Millennium Falcon, for transport. Han is also wanted by “The Huts,” so despite providing a service to the heroes, he’s on the run. If this veil of mystery wasn’t enough to add to the introduction of Solo’s character, the film adds more conflict. Greedo, working for Jadda the Hut, is done waiting for Solo to pay the money he owes. Solo shoots Greedo, and a bar fight breaks out, prompting the crew to leave immediately.

The franchise is also about attitude, and a bit of controversy. In the original cut of the film, Han shoots first. The “Disney cut” of the film shows Han getting shot at instead. The moment defined his character so well for fans, a rift formed between fans the creators. This moment is everything Star Wars is about: character and fandom. Full of Star Wars‘ ragtag spirit and the idea of being yourself to the fullest in the face of your adversity keeps Star Wars fresh for every generation that comes across it.

Top 10 Modern Movie Soundtracks

Top 10 best modern movie soundtracks

Soundtracks have always been an important part of movies, from soothing orchestral melodies to popular songs to rock ‘n’ roll classics. Even silent films had soundtracks. Today that tradition continues. Almost every mainstream picture released includes some form of music. Recently, however, filmmakers have been looking to the past for inspiration. Many modern films include songs from the 1960s to the 1980s. Sometimes they do this to make a historical period come alive. Other times it’s merely because the song fit. Though this annoys some older fans, it really does help introduce great songs to a wider audience. Here are a handful of our favorite modern movie soundtracks.

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

Unlike most comic book movies, Guardians of the Galaxy includes an absolutely amazing vintage soundtrack featuring songs by Bowie (“Moonage Daydream”) and the Runaways (“Cherry Bomb”). This is because the main character, an Earthman who spent much of his life in space, carries a 1980s Walkman wherever he goes. He often references the pop culture of his home planet, too, which helps bring this otherworldly movie back to earth.

How to Talk to Girls at Parties (2017)

How to Talk to Girls at Parties is a period piece about the punk scene, so of course there’s good music! The film opens with a classic song by the Damned (“New Rose,” which happens to be the first London punk single ever released). Many of the soundtrack’s other songs aren’t historical, however. That’s partly because half the characters are aliens. Still, the quirky mix of classic punk and futuristic dub works.

Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008)

Repo! The Genetic Opera began life as a catchy, eccentric, bleakly comedic stage musical in 2002. By 2008, the creators released an oddly-cast film version. It takes place in a world devastated by an epidemic of organ failure. As a result, a company called GeneCo makes a fortune selling organs on special payment plans. If someone can’t pay on time, the infamous Repo Man takes the organs back. Also, in this world of weirdness, everyone loves opera for some reason. Perhaps that’s why they all sing constantly. The music’s surprisingly good, too, considering that Paris Hilton plays a main character. It’s so insanely catchy, people call it the Rocky Horror of this generation.

Get Spooked: Top 10 Horror Movie Soundtracks

T2: Trainspotting (2017)

T2: Trainspotting begins with a modern, electronic soundtrack, then slowly descends into a nostalgic mix of old and new. After all, half the characters (metaphorically) live in the past. They spend too much time remembering more exciting times. Sick Boy and Begbie still hate Renton for his betrayal. Spud still uses skag, though he’s clearly not doing well. They’re all pathetic, watered-down versions of their younger selves. Eventually they must learn to accept that they’re old. The film ends with a Prodigy remix of Iggy Pop’s classic song “Lust For Life.” It’s perfect.

Atomic Blonde (2017)

Based on a graphic novel, Atomic Blonde weaves a complex tale of espionage and betrayal. It’s about an MI6 agent named Lorraine Broughton who is sent to recover a list of all the active spies in Berlin. Things get more complicated from there, including a subplot involving Broughton and a female lover. The filmmakers wanted to breathe life into what could’ve been a stuffy Cold War movie, so they added tons of period (well, early ’80s) music, from Bowie to New Order and the Clash to Siouxsie Sioux.

Sucker Punch (2011)

Critics and audiences alike weren’t exactly fond of Sucker Punch. It tells the sorry tale of a young woman abused by her stepfather. He sends her to a mental asylum to be lobotomized and she deals with this by fantasizing vividly. Half the story takes place in her mind. Music plays a major role, though the songs are all covers. The movie’s star, Emily Browning, sings a few of them, which adds to the feel of the film. It makes the music seem even more fitting. There’s also a surprisingly awesome Skunk Anansie version of the Stooges’ “Search and Destroy.”

Suicide Squad (2016)

Admittedly, Suicide Squad wasn’t so great. The plot made very little sense. None of the characters seemed too likable. It’s probably one of the worst superhero movies of the century. But that soundtrack? Wow. From modern hip-hop to classic rock, it sure sounded cool. The soundtrack album peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard 100. Also, the trailer’s use of “Ballroom Blitz” introduced glam band Sweet to a whole new generation of listeners.

Hear the Horror: Top 10 John Carpenter Soundtracks

Baby Driver (2017)

Baby Driver is a simple, almost cliche story. The endearingly reluctant criminal nicknamed Baby Driver tries to get legit after paying off his debt. Sadly, there’s always one last job, and as you’d expect, things don’t go so well. This would be just another heist movie if it weren’t for the amazing music. Like an extra-long musical, this sublime movie revolves around its soundtrack. The songs all fit like a glove. If we didn’t know better, we’d think that Focus wrote “Hocus Pocus” specifically for this movie.

The Muppets (2011)

The Muppets helped bring that beloved family of puppets back into the public eye. Though far more child-oriented than the original show and 1979 film, The Muppets is still worth watching. It also included a variety of songs old and new. Some, like “The Rainbow Connection,” originated in earlier Muppet media. Others were written for the movie. There are also a few pop songs, including one by Jefferson Starship. And, at one point, a group of Muppets cover Nirvana’s hit “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

Rock of Ages (2012)

Rock of Ages isn’t a masterpiece, though it’s still entertaining. It tells the story of a washed-up rock star (Tom Cruise) who is hired by a failing club. The soundtrack consists primarily of heavy metal and ’80s glam covers. From Guns and Roses to Journey, Twisted Sister to Bon Jovi. Even the more ridiculous songs managed to seem epic. On the Billboard charts, the soundtrack album peaked at No. 5. The filmmakers also hired a few actors with musical backgrounds, including Catherine Zeta-Jones, who began her career in London’s West End. That always helps.

Top Gun sequel lands seven additional cast members

Despite getting pushed back by over a year, Top Gun: Maverick continues to fill out its cast in rather quick fashion. Deadline reports that Kara Wang (Good Trouble), Jack Schumacher (Empire), Greg Tarzan Davis (Chicago P.D.), Jake Picking (Blockers), Raymond Lee (Amazon’s Mozart in the Jungle), Jean Louisa Kelly (Ant-Man), and Lyliana Wray (Strange Angel) will join Tom Cruise on his latest trek to the danger zone.

Those seven new additions will join an ensemble that also includes Jennifer Connelly, Val Kilmer, Ed Harries, Jon Hamm, and Miles Teller.

None of the actors’ roles has been revealed, aside from a vague tease that Wang’s character will play one of two female pilots, with the other being the already announced Monica Barbara.

Top Gun: Maverick is said to be set in a world of drone technology and fifth generation fighters along with exploring the end of the era of dogfighting.

Joseph Kosinski, who previously directed Cruise in Oblivion, will helm the sequel, with Peter Craig, Justin Marks and Eric Warren Singer penning the script. Although the title Top Gun: Maverick floated around briefly, the film is currently without an official title.

A follow-up to Tony Scott’s 1986 hit has been in the works for quite some time, with Tom Cruise interested in reprising his role as United States Naval Aviator Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer previously outlined that the film will deal with the rise of unmanned drones and pilots becoming a thing of the past.

The original Top Gun was directed by Tony Scott and also starred Kelly McGillis, Anthony Edwards and Tom Skerritt. The film won an Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Take My Breath Away” performed by Berlin. In 2015, the United States Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the National Film Registry, finding it “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

Paramount Pictures has set a Top Gun sequel release date for June 26, 2020.

Night School is at the top of the class, opening to $28 million domestically

Universal Pictures‘ new comedy Night School opened as the #1 movie in America this weekend, bringing in an estimated $28 million domestically and another $5.5 million from 19 international territories including the U.K. & Ireland, making its worldwide total  $33.5 million for the weekend. The film’s opening is a slightly lower than average take for Hart’s career, below the likes of Ride Along ($41.5 million), Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle ($36 million), Central Intelligence ($35 million), and others; while still above the openings for About Last Night ($25.6 million) and The Wedding Ringer ($20.6 million). Directed by Malcolm D. Lee, Night School also stars Tiffany Haddish, Taran Killam, Rob Riggle, Romany Malco, and Ben Schwartz.

Warner Bros. upcoming animated adventure Smallfoot opened in second place, bringing in $23 million domestically, the third highest opening for the Warner Animation Group (beating out 2016’s Storks, while staying behind The LEGO Batman Movie and The LEGO Movie). Internationally the film opened with $15.6 million giving it a global debut of $38.6 million. Smallfoot boasts an impressive voice cast, including Channing Tatum, James Corden, Zendaya, Common, LeBron James, Gina Rodriguez, Danny DeVito, Yara Shahidi, Ely Henry, and Jimmy Tatro.

Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment’s The House with a Clock in its Walls fell from first to third place in its second weekend, dipping to $12.5 million for a domestic total of $44.7 million, the film is within spitting distance of becoming Eli Roth’s highest grossing movie (currently 2006’s Hostel at $47.3 million [$66.9 million when adjusted for inflation]). Lionsgate’s A Simple Favor moved from second place to fourth palce at the domestic box office, adding another $6.6 million to its total for a domestic haul of $43 million. Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively lead the Paul Feig directed movie which also stars Andrew Rannells, Linda Cardellini, Jean Smart, and Rupert Friend.

Warner Bros. Pictures‘ The Nun fell to fifth place, bringing in another $5.43 million.

The original Top Gun was directed by Tony Scott and also starred Kelly McGillis, Anthony Edwards and Tom Skerritt. Top 10 Action Movies Of The Past Decade

Top 10 action movies of the past decade

If actions speak louder than words, then maybe action films are the masterpieces we need. Action films can inspire us to get moving and solve our problems—then save something. Why do we love watching people to impossible tasks when we relax? Today, most action films are blockbusters, high budget, and filled with big names. Technology has reached a point where we’ll never be able to reenact the stunts, car chases, and explosions we see on a regular basis, so we quote them, mimic smaller actions, and watch again and again. Here are 10 of the best action films from the past decade.

10. Iron Man (2008)

Can you believe Iron Man came out 10 years ago?  The prologue to the Marvel Universe, Iron Man shocked audiences with its sheer awesomeness and kick-started a franchise that would put out 20 action movies over the subsequent decade. Twelve films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe are still scheduled for release. Ant Man and the Wasp is the 20th film in the  series, which averages one every six months. People love these movies for the action and the likable characters. Iron Man rebooted Robert Downey Jr.’s acting career and showcased an office-action heroine side of big star Gwyneth Paltrow in an explosive adventure fans continue to watch on cable TV before they head out to the bar on the weekend.

9. Taken (2008)

“I will find you, I will kill you.” Liam Neeson was nominated for an Academy Award for Schindler’s List but at this point in his rich career, action movies are where we quote him most. Taken is the film that basically rebooted the “kidnapping movie” genre and gave plenty of Americans something to think about before traveling abroad. Grossing more than $226 million at the box office, Taken features interrogations, electrocution, and reminds viewers just how much one will do for their family.

8. The Hurt Locker (2008)

Winner of Best Picture at the Academy Awards, this film follows an American Explosive Ordinance Team in the Iraq War. Gritty and dark, it was filmed in the Middle East, adding to the realism of the film. As a character-driven film, Jeremy Renner diffuses bombs and also our hearts. With an awesome sniper sequence at the end, The Hurt Locker is a film that will keep you on the edge of your seat and, like most war films, near a box of tissues. The film’s director, Kathryn Bigelow, became the first woman to win the Academy Award for Best Director and became the first film directed by a woman to win Best Picture.

7. The Expendables (2010)

With a cast like this, The Expendables is the ultimate homage to the action films of the 1980s and 1990s. Featuring the likes of Sylvester Stallone, Jet Li, Steve Austin, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mickey Rourke, and more, this film was made for audiences young and old. Thought it was originally supposed to be a one-off flick, the film has inspired two sequels with a fourth film on the way.

6. 13 Assassins (2010)

The fight sequences in 13 Assassins are amazing. Featuring an all-Japanese cast and script, the story follows 12 samurai and a hunter who are hired to take down a new leader. Before they get to him, they have to go through several hundred of his loyal soldiers. Martial arts films done well often remind us that action is art. 13 Assassins is no exception. Featuring sword fighting, hand to hand combat, explosives, puzzles, and more, 13 Assassins is chock full of the sheer awesomeness that keeps us coming back to action movies.

5. Furious 7 (2015)

Paul Walker’s swan song, this film embodies the franchise and leaves its gas pedal perpendicular to the ground. The film brings back the long, legendary cast, including Michelle Rodriguez, Dwayne Johnson, Vin Diesel, and Kurt Russell. The film features a tearful goodbye scene to Paul Walker, a proper tribute to the beloved action star. An impressive vehicle roster and action stunts that include a car dropped from a plane, a bus that goes off a cliff, and a heist prove that almost anything is possible with the right cars. The Fast films aren’t going anywhere and this movie symbolizes why.

4. Creed (2015)

While Rocky VI kept audiences hungry for the eye of the tiger, Creed gave us our fill.  Sylvester Stallone is back as Rocky, and he’s training his old frenemy’s son, Adonis, played by Michael B. Jordan. Rocky copes with aging as Adonis grapples with what it means to be Apollo Creed’s son. Emblematic of our time, Creed is a harrowing example of seeing a millennial struggle with identity and coming of age while a baby boomer struggles to pass the torch. The training sequences are there, the ring action is there, the soundtrack, the love story, and everything else audiences loved about the original Rocky shine in this tasteful reboot. Also, props to Sylvester Stallone to making it on this list twice.

3. Edge of Tomorrow (2010)

Would a list of top action movies be complete without Tom Cruise? In a nutshell, Edge of Tomorrow is Armageddon meets….Groundhog Day, of all concepts. Tom Cruise  plays a new soldier that wakes up on the same day every time he dies. Soon, he learns the aliens that Earth is fighting against have the same ability. Day by day, Cruise learns more about combat, aliens, and himself in a concept that’s so wrong it’s right. The only action movie that isn’t a reboot or part of a franchise on this list, a sequel is in the works, proving the film earned its stripes.

2. The Dark Knight (2008)

It’s weird to look back and remember that The Dark Knight and Iron Man came out months apart from each other. Iron Man feels so recent, probably due to the continued storytelling of the Marvel Universe. Nolan’s trilogy, however, feels further back in time, perhaps because nothing could top this movie. Whether it be Nolan’s direction, the film’s revolutionary use of IMAX cameras, or Heath Ledger’s performance, anyone can be dazzled by it. The film inspired the “gritty reboot” movement in Hollywood, which hasn’t quite ended. New releases with an accompanying IMAX version are now uncommon. The film also has mythological clout in that Ledger’s performance was not only so iconic, it was his last. It’s rare for a sequel to be better than it’s predecessor, but Dark Knight reminds us that when it’s right, it is so right.

1. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

When it comes to action films, audiences want everything. Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron are the only duo anyone ever would want to roll with when America becomes one giant desert. Mad Max: Fury Road not only serves everything, it does so flawlessly. Dystopia, a 45-minute car chase, battle, war, kidnapping, a heist, prisoner escape, eye-sore villains, betrayal, revenge, triumph; Fury Road leaves few boxes unchecked. One box that few films of its type can or even care to accomplish. While the film’s depiction of the future is grim, its quality is impeccable, technologically and socially. With the success of this film and also Black Panther, which deserves an honorable mention in the least, new possibilities for action movies open up.
