Star Wars: The Last Jedi box office explodes to $450 million worldwide!

Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm‘s Star Wars: The Last Jedi exploded to a global opening of $450 million! The film entered the record books with an estimated domestic opening of $220 million to become the No. 1 debut of 2017 and the No. 2 debut of all time behind only Star Wars: The Force Awakens‘ $247.9 million. Internationally, excluding China (it opens there on January 5), Star Wars: The Last Jedi grossed $230 million from 54 markets.

The $450 million global debut ranks as the No. 5 opening of all time, behind only The Fate of the Furious (including China), Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Jurassic World (including China), and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. The new Star Wars movie had a $40.6 million global IMAX debut from 776 screens, which is the second-best global debut ever in IMAX history (excluding China) after Star Wars: the Force Awakens.

Like Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Rogue OneStar Wars: The Last Jedi received an A CinemaScore from audiences, which should mean a healthy road ahead for the film’s box office.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is written and directed by Rian Johnson (BrickLooper) and continues the storylines introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, welcoming back cast members Mark Hamill, the late Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Lupita Nyong’o, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, and Andy Serkis. New cast members will include Academy Award winner Benicio Del Toro, Academy Award nominee Laura Dern, and newcomer Kelly Marie Tran.

The Top Ten Black Mirror Episodes

The Top Ten Black Mirror Episodes

Black Mirror is a crazy show and it has gone to some crazy places. From virtual reality to futuristic warfare and beyond, the series is known for taking concepts related to technology and human nature to the absolute weirdest extremes in order to comment on the ways that people live their lives now and the directions they may be headed if they remain on the path of unchecked advancement. It has received acclaim for its bizarre yet somehow grounded plots, and here at ComingSoon.net, we believe that it’s about time somebody ranked the top ten Black Mirror episodes. Before taking a look at this list though, remember that since Black Mirror is such a twisty show, it’s near impossible to avoid talking about any of the episodes at all without spoiling anything about them. Because of this, we’ll be trying to keep end-of-episode major spoilers to a minimum, but beware that reading beyond this point is done at the reader’s own risk – and know that you’ll probably get more enjoyment out of the list if you watch the episodes first yourself, anyways. There’s only a grand total of 13 at the moment and they’re all on Netflix, so it shouldn’t take too long to binge on them.

Without further ado, here is the best that Black Mirror’s dark world has to offer:

10. Be Right Back

Have you ever lost a loved one? If not, have you thought about how it might feel? How you might be tempted to bring them back, and to have them with you always? Pet Sematary taught us that this might be a bad idea if it involves cursed ground, but what if you could do it through technology?

This episode of Black Mirror asks exactly that question, and the response is unsettling, to say the least. When a woman’s husband dies, she turns to a new program that downloads all of the information on his social media profile to a copy of his body and then sends him back to her home to live out the rest of his factory-prepared life with her. At first she’s overjoyed, but soon she begins to notice that something is wrong with the artificial man trying to be the real man she once loved and lost.

As a meditation on mortality, “Be Right Back” is a warning in the tradition of sci-fi horror and it does its job disturbingly well.

9. Nosedive

What would you do for social approval? That’s what “Nosedive” asks its audiences, and its method is extremely clever. The world of the episode is much like our own, except people regularly use an app on their phones to rate each other after interacting. People with high ratings become social elites with access to the best healthcare and other privileges, while social outcasts are left to rot on their own.

The protagonist of the episode is a woman who slowly becomes obsessed with the ratings in question as she treks across the country to go to an old (popular) friend’s wedding in the hopes of gaining social status. Along the way, she runs into trouble and so do her ratings, and so she becomes increasingly dependent on the big speech she plans to make at the wedding to save her social standing from complete ruins. The question is, by the time she gets there, will she even be able to deliver her speech with dignity?

Though this episode’s overall arc is a bit predictable, it still builds to a satisfying climax and it is one of the exceedingly rare episodes of Black Mirror to end on a sweet (if a bit ironic) note of hope. The protagonist does find herself in the world of ratings, but not quite how you might expect, and not quite where either. In a real world where people judge each other harshly for even the slightest of social faux pas or differences, this episode is important and timely.

8. The Waldo Moment

Waldo is a cartoon bear from a dumb comedy show that makes crude comments about people and events. He goes live once to mock out a politician and boom, history is made. Suddenly, he’s in the running for a government position and the guy who voices him is tasked with bringing him to life for publicity and profits. He becomes concerned about the ethical implications of crashing an election as a fictional animal person, but there are those who are willing to do anything it takes to benefit from the bear, including stealing the voice actor’s role and leaving him in the dust.

This is the story of “The Waldo Moment,” and when this episode was originally aired people found it to be a bit too outlandish to take seriously. Until the reality television host and real estate mogul Donald Trump was elected as the president of the United States, that is. Then suddenly the episode was revealed to be shockingly predictive, and anyone who said that something like Waldo could never happen found themselves eating their words. In just one moment, Waldo had become real and the whole world was forced to face that fact.

This episode is great because not only does it go to show just how pressing the dangers presented in Black Mirror actually are in spite of their sci-fi dystopian twists, it also does a great job exploring more general political and moral themes. Is it really admirable to run as a candidate solely to ruin another party even if you have no platform of your own? When do farcical parodies go too far, and who is responsible for allowing them to? What matters more, safety or political statement? All this contemplation and more, brought to you by a blue CG bear with a penchant for making silly fart noises.

7. White Christmas

Black Mirror’s “White Christmas” is notable for not actually taking place during any main season of the show. Instead it was aired between seasons 1 and 2 in 2014 as a bonus, and instead of being a single episode, it was more like three episodes tied together by a single overarching narrative, sort of like a “Treehouse of Horrors”-styled anthology as described by the show’s creator, Charlie Brooker. Each part had its own twist at the end, and each part built upon the last until the final revelation was made at the very end.

In the first segment, one self-professed “alpha male” talks a man through a date via hidden headset in exchange for the right to sell the visuals of his sexual experience to paying viewers as taboo pornography. Things only get stranger from there as the concepts of recursive realities, tiny servant clones, and blocking people out as you might do on a web forum but in real life are all explored, then tied together at the end with a pretty, terrifying bow. Each individual segment is good in “White Christmas,” but it’s the effect that all of them have in conjunction with each other that makes the whole thing such an interesting watch.

6. The Entire History of You

Imagine being able to remember everything. Rather, imagine having a device that did it for you so that you could play your memories back on repeat like a DVD in first person. How would you use that? How would that impact human society? Presumably you could remember people’s names without worrying about it, do better on tests, review events to confirm that you’re remembering them properly, and so on. It could even be used for security purposes, to catch criminals by using the recorded memories as evidence. It’d be great, right?

Well… unless you happen to be paranoid, like the man of the hour in this episode of Black Mirror. After going to a small gathering of old friends, he notices something unusual about his wife’s behavior and he begins reviewing his memories of the night over and over again, trying to spot the thread. After some rematches, he begins to suspect that his wife may not be as faithful to him as he may have believed, and this suspicion rapidly becomes drunken obsession. He begins to search for clues throughout his memories to prove that his suspicions are appropriate, but the truth may be worse than not knowing.

This is one of those Black Mirror episodes with an ending so painful for the main character that it can be difficult to watch. The conclusion is one that comments on what it means to be human, and though it is exceptionally dark there is a small ray of hope hinted at as well.

5. National Anthem

The princess has been kidnapped and held for ransom, and it’s up to the Prime Minister to save her. How can he do this? Well, by… “doing it” with a pig according to terrorist demands. At first almost nobody expects him to actually go through with this sick act of bestiality, but as tension builds and public demand for the princess to be saved strengthens, the Prime Minister is forced to make a decision that will either make or break him for the rest of his life.

Yep, this was the first ever episode of Black Mirror, and it sure made one heck of an entrance. In spite of its bizarre premise, it remains tense throughout and manages to use the insanity of its concept to comment on personal responsibility, pride and shame, and social pressures caused by the twisting of Internet news media. Without saying what happens, the climax is both heartbreaking and surprising, and it left viewers feeling like Black Mirror really was something different than what they were used to watching on television.

4. Shut Up And Dance

In “Shut Up And Dance,” a mysterious hacker uses the camera on a boy’s computer to blackmail him into playing an increasingly dangerous game using footage of the young man watching pornography as his bargaining chip. If the boy can follow the bizarre commands given to him for 24 hours, he’ll win the footage back and all will be well. If not? Well then he’ll just be faced with the absolute most humiliating moment in his life when the footage goes live on his social media friends list for everyone he cares about to see in full detail. Shortly into this sick, social “Saw-esque” game, the boy finds himself forced to work with a grown man in the same situation, except he is being held captive by footage of him cheating on his wife. Can the two work together, or will they both go down in flames?

The thing that makes this episode compelling is actually not the hacker’s game itself. Though it is certainly compelling to watch as it slowly builds to a sickening crescendo, the real value of the episode comes more from the reveal at the end which completely changes the implications of the boy’s actions. Safe to say, he may not be as innocent as he first appears, and yet his portrayal is still so sympathetic that even when the curtain drops it’s hard not to feel for him. The usual schadenfreude associated with watching someone get busted is absent, and so the audience is only left with a tough moral dilemma and emotional pain.

3. San Junipero

This episode is tricky to describe without spoiling it completely because its entire nature as a premise is the main twist. That said, suffice to say that it features an uncommon television romance, a variety of decade nostalgia references, a concept that might just blow your mind, and the only unquestionably happy ending in the entire Black Mirror series.

Strap in and head to San Junipero, where everyone is happy and yet nothing is what it seems.

2. Fifteen Million Merits

We’ve all partaken in the daily grind. We go to work, we run on the treadmill of our dull day jobs, and then we use our hard-earned money to buy things in the hopes that even one of these things might actually make us happy, all the while consuming more media than we can fully process without extensive effort and time that we don’t have. The only difference is, in this episode of Black Mirror, the treadmill is more literally a stationary bike.

This episode stars a man who is sick of spinning his life away for artificial rewards and wants to experience something real, just once. When he meets a woman and falls in love, he thinks it might be his chance, and so he saves up the titular fifteen million merits (which are a kind of virtue currency, like a dystopian bitcoin) to put the lady he likes on an American Idol-esque reality TV show to showcase her singing talents. When this goes disastrously wrong, as things are prone to going in this series, the hero of the story takes it upon himself to dedicate his life to rebellion – but at what cost?

The episode has a truly heart-wrenching confrontation near the end that asks viewers to question what is real to them and to ponder the nature of rebellion in a world that seems intent on commodifying everything. This one will stick with you like the final montage of Requiem for a Dream and it’ll stay burned into your mind for a long, long time.

1. Hated in the Nation

This is the longest episode of Black Mirror yet and the latest to be released, coming in at nearly an hour and a half – that’s about the length of a full movie. The film-length episode follows the exploits of two detectives in different fields coming together to investigate a chain of social media-related killings in an effort to stop the next one before it happens. As the truth is peeled back layer by layer, it becomes clear that the scope of the killings is on a much grander scale than anyone could’ve predicted, and the episode becomes a race against time that doesn’t let up until the very end.

As a special season finale, “Hated in the Nation’s” strength comes not from its advanced runtime but from its ability to remain engaging in spite of it. The twists and turns come quickly, but with solid pacing that prevents the whole thing from feeling like an exercise in audience exploitation. The nature of culpability is held under a microscope for the duration of the episode, and ultimately it is left to the viewer to think about their own lives and decide where the line of responsibility can be drawn between spectator and participant.

And there you have it, the top ten Black Mirror episodes, ranked. Of course, with the fourth season on its way on December 29 with six episodes incoming, this list may change sooner than later. Only time will tell, just as we might be headed towards a future that resembles this show even as you read this article. Spooky, right?

George Clooney and Matt Charman to develop Watergate limited series for Netflix

George Clooney (Up in the AirThe Descendants) and Bridge of Spies writer Matt Charman are partnering up with Clooney’s Smokehouse Pictures partner Grant Heslov to develop an eight-part limited series about Watergate, according to Deadline. The project has reportedly ended up at Netflix.

The series, if it goes through, will be produced by Sonar Entertainment. The site reports that each episode of the Watergate drama would focus on one of the people involved in the scandal that rocked the Presidency, including Attorney General John Mitchell and Nixon counsel John Ehrlichman and will be modeled after the Japanese drama Rashomon.

Clooney and Heslov will serve as executive producers, while Charman will write the script for Watergate. The Watergate scandal took place in the early 1970s after a break-in by five men at the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate office complex in Washington D.C. The break-in took place on June 17, 1972. The scandal involved President Richard Nixon’s administration trying to cover up its involvement. The scandal led to President Nixon resigning from office.

Smokehouse is currently working on another project, Catch-22 based on the Joesph Heller novel. Clooney is set to star and direct. Catch-22 comes to us from Paramount Television and Anonymous Content.

What do you guys think about a limited series based on the Watergate scandal? Who would you like to see play the lead roles? We want to hear from you! Leave us your thoughts in the comments below or tweet them to us @ComingSoonnet.

Willa Fitzgerald cast in the movie adaptation of The Goldfinch

Willa Fitzgerald (Little Women) has joined the cast of Warner Bros. and Amazon Studios’ movie adaptation of The Goldfinch, according to Variety. Fitzgerald, who will play the role of Pippa, joins Ansel Elgort (The Fault in Our Stars) who plays Theo in the film, and Aneurin Barnard (Dunkirk) who will play Boris. The Goldfinch will be directed by John Crowley. Warner Bros. has yet to comment on the casting. The film is based on Donna Tartt’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book, “The Goldfinch”

Described by the Pulitzer committee as being, “a beautifully written coming-of-age novel… that stimulates the mind and touches the heart,” The Goldfinch is Tartt’s first novel in more than a decade. Published in 2013, it is officially described as follows:

Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don’t know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his longing for his mother, he clings to the one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

As an adult, Theo moves silkily between the drawing rooms of the rich and the dusty labyrinth of an antiques store where he works. He is alienated and in love–and at the center of a narrowing, ever more dangerous circle.

Nina Jacobson, Brett Ratner and Brad Simpson are attached to produce The Goldfinch with Racheline Benveniste and Courtenay Valenti overseeing for Warner Bros.

Rob Lowe set to direct and star in a gender-swapped remake of The Bad Seed

Rob Lowe (St. Elmo’s FireCode Black) is set to direct and star in a gender-swapped remake of the Academy Award-nominated 1956 film The Bad Seed for Lifetime, according to Deadline. The film is in negotiations with Warner Bros., which owns the rights to the film.

The gender-swapping in The Bad Seed isn’t the lead role, which will remain female. It’s the gender of the parent, played by 1958 by Nancy Kelly, who received an Academy Award nomination for her role. Patty McCormack also received a nomination for playing Kelly’s daughter in the film. In this version, Lowe will play the father of the young daughter, who is evil. The Bad Seed will be written by Barbara Marshall (Wish Upon). The film was based on the best-selling William Marsh novel, which was developed into a Broadway play.

In the story, a terrible event happens the young Emma’s (she’s Rhoda in the 1956 film) school and her father (Lowe) has to question everything he knows about Emma. Can he keep her involvement a secret or will he have to stop her from harming others?

The 1956 film was directed by Mervyn LeRoy from an adapted screenplay by John Lee Mahin. Lowe will executive produce The Bad Seed alongside Mark Wolper from The Wolper Organization and Elizabeth Stephen. Casting is currently underway and production is looking at a start in early 2018.

Rob Lowe is known for starring in the TV series The West Wing as well as the CBS drama Code Black. Lowe has also been recurring in the space comedy The Orville. He stars and executive produces The Lowe Files for A&E. He’s known for starring in films like St. Elmo’s FireThe Outsiders and Wayne’s World.

Bill Lawrence is known for creating the medical comedy Scrubs starring Zach Braff and Donald Faison, which ran for nine seasons. He co-created Cougar Town, which ran for six seasons, three on ABC and three on TBS. It starred Courtney Cox, Christa Miller, Busy Phillips, Dan Byrd, Josh Hopkins, Ian Gomez and Brian Van Holt. Lawrence also co-created Spin City, which starred Heather Locklear, Charlie Sheen and Michael J. Fox. The show ran for six seasons on ABC. He’s also written for FriendsThe Nanny and Boy Meats World. Lawrence served as an executive producer on Undatable and will play the same role on the upcoming series Life Sentence on The CW.

The Top 10 Christmas Movies to Watch

The Top 10 Christmas Movies to Watch

Christmas is a wonderful time of the year, and what better to celebrate it with than a fun film? There are plenty of Christmas movies to choose from, however, and so it can be difficult to decide which one to go with. To make that decision easier, here is a list of the ten best movies you can watch with loved ones to pass the time waiting for the most special day of the year to come around:

10. Robbie the Reindeer: Hooves of Fire

Aardman, the studio behind Wallace and Gromit and Shaun the Sheep, never fails to create delightfully-entertaining worlds with a hilarious mix of cartoony and snarky humor. While technically Robbie was not made directly by them, a number of Aardman employees worked on it and it shows. In this Christmas special, Rudolph’s son Robbie with a bouncy nose comes to the North Pole to lead the sleigh team of reindeer on Christmas night, but there’s just one problem: He’s out of shape and lazy! Unless he can shape up for the Reindeer games with the help of a senile Santa to prove himself, there’s no way he’ll be able to lead the reindeer and all will be lost.

Spoilers: Things work out, and well enough for the special to get two sequels. These are less Christmas-oriented, but still involve the reindeer crew at Santa’s workshop, so making them into a Christmas triple feature wouldn’t be such a bad plan. The claymation will entertain kids, and some of the more adult humor will likely fly right over their heads like magical reindeer, so the adults can have a laugh too.

9. Jack Frost

The actual horror comedy movie, not the Keaton family film that accidentally resembles a horror movie.

Jack Frost is an oddball affectionate parody take on the slasher genre set to a backdrop of white snow and coated in crimson blood. When a serial killer with the name of a popular Christmas figure gets hit by some snow chemicals by accident (this isn’t Citizen Kane here), he becomes a living snowman with the ability to melt and reform at will, shoot out sharp icicles, freeze things he touches, and more. With these powers, he plans on terrorizing a town and killing its inhabitants one by one, all to get revenge on the cop who arrested him back when he was more man than snow.

Think Freddy Krueger, but in the shape of Frosty the Snowman. This movie is not for the kiddos nor is it for the feint of heart, but the pitch black sense of bizarre humor contained within it should be more than enough to entertain those with equal cravings for Christmas spirit and unconventional murders. It does have a sequel, but be warned that it takes on a much goofier (though still vulgar) tone than its predecessor if you decide to watch it after the original.

8. The Polar Express

When most people think Christmas, they generally don’t think “CG Tom Hanks.” That’s just what this thrilling ride to the North Pole by magic train offers up though, and it does it with a style that few Christmas films have ever been able to replicate. This movie is a visual and audio treat, and its pro-belief message is something that everyone, even those who have grown up, can understand and appreciate.

7. A Christmas Carol (Carrey)

Perhaps the most oft-revisited Christmas classic, A Christmas Carol has been retold and parodied a million different times in a million different ways. Like The Polar Express, however, this specific instance is one that is a visual masterpiece and a talented celebrity actor to bring it all together. Jim Carrey plays against type as the miserly Scrooge, but does a surprisingly good job. Nobody will be surprised by the now well-known plot, but the ride is so much more than the destination in this case.

6. Frosty the Snowman

Oh, Frosty. He’s a magical snowman in a top hat and he likes marching around and sliding on his belly like a penguin. What a life, right? This one will keep the young ones more actively engaged than adults, but it’s still fun to watch it again after so many years and feel those warm, nostalgic fuzzies each year. Will Frosty be back some day? You can bet he will.

There was also a really weird kind-of-sequel that got released later about a guy who tried to eliminate snow from the world, but we don’t talk about that one.

5. A Charlie Brown Christmas

You know, the one with the tiny tree? Pretty much everyone’s seen this one at least once, and for good reason; it’s an absolute classic. It’s short enough for a viewing as something of a warmup for a longer Christmas movie, and watchers of all ages can enjoy the animation with Snoopy and the gang getting together for a festive gathering that brings them all a little closer.

4. How the Grinch Stole Christmas

There are two versions of this one – here we’re talking about the one that wasn’t a weird Jim Carrey vehicle. The art is reminiscent of the Dr. Seuss novel come to life, the sight comedy is on-point like something out of a Bugs Bunny cartoon, and the message of giving’s value is timeless. It’s short, it’s sweet, and it’s hard to go wrong with the story of the green monster who literally pookied Christmas only to learn that it felt better to share it with others.

Plus it has an adorable dog with little reindeer antlers tied to its head, and that’s worth seeing it for all by itself.

3. Rudolph

The famous red nose of this Christmas legend is impossible to forget for those who grew up with the tale, and it’s just as much fun to introduce it to the little ones. It’s a story about being accepting of others’ differences and it’s told through an instantly recognizable stop-motion style that is sure to bring back good memories of watching and create new ones as well.

2. The Year Without a Santa Claus

This is the one with the Heat Miser and Snow Miser songs in it. That’s literally all you need to know about it to justify watching it on repeat.

1. The Nightmare Before Christmas

One of the only Christmas specials that you can actually justify watching twice a year, The Nightmare Before Christmas is a dark musical classic from the twisted mind of Tim Burton. Combining the frights of Halloween with the festivities of Christmas, is just the right film for anyone who wants to celebrate the season but without too much of the sugary sweetness that most Christmas-themed movies have, and it’s plenty of fun for ghouls and elves of all ages. This one wins the top spot for originality, entertainment value, longevity, and theming – no bones about it.

Rotten Tomatoes agrees, giving the film an exceptional score of 94% certified fresh.

★★★ ½

Set during the summer of 1983, Call Me by Your Name is a slow-building, affecting look at a boy not only exploring his sexuality and experiencing first love, but ultimately having his most intimate self seen and affirmed.

Elio (Timothée Chalamet) is a smart yet self-loathing 17-year-old living in Italy with his American professor father and French mother, who take in a 24-year-old American doctoral student named Oliver (Armie Hammer) for the summer. The two young men develop a rapport, which ultimately turns physical. The film notably doesn’t have an antagonist or a catastrophic event that forces them apart, other than the passing of that summer.

Due to his looks and physical presence, Hammer nails that entitled, All-American Winklevoss bravado he’s known for; but unlike some of his previous performances, that facade peels back here to reveal confusion, insecurity, and longing in his most complex work to date. However, his character doesn’t truly transcend the fact that he has the upper hand in the relationship or manage to earn being called “good,” despite Elio’s father definitively describing him as such.

Though the film provides space for Oliver’s character to develop, its primary focus is on Elio’s emotional journey. Its success firmly relies on the performance of relative newcomer Chalamet. The movie has little dialogue on the whole, so facial reactions and body language are the primary way in which Elio is able to communicate his inner life with others and the audience. The final scene is actually a long, uninterrupted tight shot of Elio’s face as he silently stares into the fire and processes the gamut of emotions he’s felt over the course of the summer. Chalamet is truly captivating in these last moments.

Elio is a teenage boy whose moods vacillate wildly, and with his unique mix of identities—American, French, Italian, and Jewish—he feels he has no one like him to confide in. Upon Oliver’s arrival, Elio finds a kindred spirit for the first time: Oliver is also a bookish, sexually undefined Jewish man, and he welcomes Elio’s outbursts of honesty. Their physical magnetism is palpable, as well as beautifully inelegant and tender. Their first time consummating their relationship reveals Italian director Luca Guadagnino’s gift for crafting sex scenes that are more about intimacy than skin, though the scene ending by jarringly panning to foliage seems like either lazy filmmaking or a way to avoid alienating wider audiences with explicit gay lovemaking. Guadagnino also applies restraint in handling the soon-to-be notorious peach scene from the novel; it could have easily come off as ridiculous, but instead feels sensual and poignant by using it as symbol for being understood and valued.

While the Italian scenery balances dreamy landscapes with visceral, sweaty bodies and runny eggs, the same balance is lacking in the plot. Elio and Oliver’s same-sex affair is allowed to exist in a safe, sun-kissed bubble with very little political or cultural context. Oliver briefly mentions not crossing a line with Elio, but whether that line is based on his faith, ’80s American values, their age difference (which is never addressed), or something else is left unexplored. On Elio’s end, his hip, liberal-intellectual parents are almost impossibly encouraging of their young son’s relationship, causing the film to slip out of romantic realism and into idyllic fantasy.

Overall, this buzzed-about movie has flaws in its direction and character development, but any praise Hammer and Chalamet earn for their work is deserved. With its lush visuals, stirring soundtrack, and gripping performances, the film ultimately achieves its goal of illustrating the power of first love to shape you and allow you to discover yourself—with enough relatability for the masses.
