Production Begins in Philadelphia on Creed II

Production starts in Philadelphia for Creed II

Production begins today in Philadelphia on Metro Goldwyn Mayer Pictures (MGM) and Warner Bros. Pictures’ Creed II, starring Michael B. Jordan and Sylvester Stallone, reprising their roles of Adonis Creed and Rocky Balboa, respectively. Creed II is the continuation of the Rocky saga and sequel to the 2015 critically-acclaimed and crowd-pleasing 2015 hit Creed, which took in more than $170 million at the worldwide box office. Ryan Coogler (Black Panther), who directed the first film, returns to the franchise as an executive producer on Creed II. The new film is being directed by Steven Caple Jr., who helmed the acclaimed 2016 drama The Land.

“When I wrote and directed ‘Creed,’ I wanted to tell a human story about a family from a new perspective, while also paying homage to the Rocky characters we’ve all grown up knowing and loving. I’ve known Steven was an amazing filmmaker since our days at USC film school together, so I can’t wait to see what he, Sly, Mike, and Tessa bring to this next chapter,” said Coogler.

Caple Jr. said, “It’s an honor to be a part of the franchise and work with such a thoughtful team. I got involved because I’ve always been a Rocky fan and I enjoy stories with heart and substance. But when Ryan put his touch on ‘Creed’ I felt another level of connection to the franchise. It started to feel personal for many different reasons. This next ‘Creed’ is a tale beyond the boxing ring and dives deep into family, legacy, and fears. I’m excited to share my view and collaborate with the talented cast and crew.”

“Ryan and Steven are voices for their generation and their shared vision for Creed has brought the Rocky franchise to an entirely new audience. We know audiences will continue to embrace the legacy that Sly created so many years ago,” said producer Irwin Winkler.

Life has become a balancing act for Adonis Creed. Between personal obligations and training for his next big fight, he is up against the challenge of his life. Facing an opponent with ties to his family’s past only intensifies his impending battle in the ring. Rocky Balboa is there by his side through it all and, together, Rocky and Adonis will confront their shared legacy, question what’s worth fighting for, and discover that nothing’s more important than family. Creed II is about going back to basics to rediscover what made you a champion in the first place, and remembering that, no matter where you go, you can’t escape your history.

Also reprising their roles from the first film are Tessa Thompson as Bianca, Phylicia Rashad as Mary Anne, Wood Harris as Tony ‘Little Duke’ Burton, and Andre Ward as Danny ‘Stuntman’ Wheeler. The new cast is rounded out with Florian “The Big Nasty” Munteanu as Viktor Drago, Dolph Lundgren returning to the role of Ivan Drago, and Russell Hornsby as Buddy Marcelle. Creed II will be distributed theatrically in the U.S. by MGM on November 21, 2018, and Warner Bros. Pictures will distribute the film internationally.

Caple Jr. directs from an original screenplay written by Stallone based on characters from the Rocky franchise. The film is produced by Irwin Winkler, Charles Winkler, William Chartoff, David Winkler, Kevin King-Templeton, and Stallone. Coogler, Jordan and Guy Riedel will executive produce.

Collaborating with Caple Jr. is a creative team led by director of photography Kramer Morgenthau (Thor: The Dark World, Game of Thrones); production designer Franco Carbone (The Expendables, Billionaire Boys Club); costume designers Lizz Wolf (A Single Man, Dreamgirls); art director Jesse Rosenthal (Black Panther, Trumbo); fight coordinator Daniel Hernandez (Avengers: Infinity War, The Fate of the Furious); technical boxing advisor Robert Sale (Grudge Match, Ali); special effects coordinator Patrick White (Baby Driver, Deepwater Horizon) and VFX producer Crystal Dowd (Straight Outta Compton, Pitch Perfect 2). Filming will take place primarily in Philadelphia with additional locations in New Mexico.

Creed, directed by Coogler, was released by Metro Goldwyn Mayer Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema in November 2015 and went on to garner many honors for Stallone, including a Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture, and an Academy Award nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role.

The CW has released the photos for this week’s Supernatural Episode 13.17, titled “The Thing.”  Check out the images in the gallery below!

Similar to the episode promo, the photos reveal a bloodied Gabriel (Richard Speight, Jr.) who made a surprise return to the series this season as Asmodeus’ prisoner. While the King of Hell and his new partner Ketch have an intense confrontation, the Winchester brothers find themselves in some serious trouble after coming in contact with a mysterious group of people who appear to kidnap Sam! Supernatural 13.17 is set to air on April 5, 2018, and is officially described as follows:

“Sam and Dean continue to collect the pieces necessary to open a rift to the other world in order to save their family. Their latest quest leads them to a Men of Letters bunker from the 1920s and a hungry God from another dimension. Meanwhile, Ketch makes a shocking decision about Gabriel after an unruly encounter with Asmodeus. John Showalter directed the episode written by Davy Perez.”

Supernatural follows brothers Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) Winchester. The thrilling and terrifying journey of the Winchester brothers continues in Supernatural‘s 13th season. Sam and Dean have spent their lives on the road, battling supernatural threats that include everything from the demon that killed their mother to the usual vampires, ghosts, shape-shifters, angels and fallen gods rampaging over the land. They’ve come out on top with the help of allies, both human and supernatural, but every victory comes at a price.

John Boyega Says Star Wars: Episode IX Won't Keep Finn & Rey Apart

John Boyega says Star Wars: Episode IX won’t keep Finn & Rey apart

It’s become a tradition in Star Wars trilogies for the middle chapters to split our heroes up, whether its Han & Leia and Luke going their separate ways in Empire Strikes Back, or Anakin & Padme and Obi-Wan going on their own adventures in Attack of the Clones. Last December’s The Last Jedi proved no different, putting Finn & Poe and Rey on different story tracks that only overlapped towards the end. Now John Boyega has confirmed at Washington DC’s annual Awesome Con (via SlashFilm) that J.J. Abrams’ upcoming Star Wars: Episode IX will bring this trilogy’s favorite duo Finn & Rey back together in the third act.

“I haven’t read the script for ‘Episode 9,’ but Daisy did shoot me a text saying, ‘Oh my gosh, I just heard from J.J. [Abrams], and we’re back together. That’s what I’m really excited about, is Finn and Rey back together again,’” Boyega confirmed.

If Poe and Rey meeting at the end of The Last Jedi is any indication, we could also see the sequel trilogy’s primary trio team up for an adventure together for the first time. Here’s hoping!

According to Bounding Into Comics, Boyega also dropped some some info about his potential involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, saying he has met with Marvel about playing a superhero in a movie years down the line. He also squelched the rumor that he would play Blade, stating that it would be a “spit in the face of Wesley [Snipes] if I took Blade,” adding that he was “all for Wesley [Snipes] playing Blade.”

J.J. Abrams will direct the Star Wars: Episode IX and co-write the script with Chris Terrio (Justice LeagueArgo). Star Wars: Episode IX will be produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan, Abrams, Bad Robot, and Lucasfilm. Previously set for a May 24, 2019 release date, the film will now arrive on December 20, 2019.

The characters from Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Episode IX can currently be seen in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, now playing in theaters globally. Written and directed by Rian Johnson (BrickLooper), the film continues the storylines introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, welcoming back cast members Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, the late Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa, Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, Daisy Ridley as Rey, John Boyega as Finn, Lupita Nyong’o as Maz Kanata, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, Domhnall Gleeson as Hux, Anthony Daniels as C-3PO, Gwendoline Christie as Captain Phasma, and Andy Serkis as Supreme Leader Snoke. New cast members include Academy Award winner Benicio Del Toro as DJ, Academy Award nominee Laura Dern as Vice Admiral Holdo and newcomer Kelly Marie Tran as Rose.

Are you looking forward to seeing Finn & Rey back together in Star Wars: Episode IX? Let us know in the comments.

The Best 90s Cartoons

The Best 90s Cartoons

With the Netflix ReBoot reboot now available, there’s no shortage of cartoons getting a makeover for new generations. Even though the technology of the time has dated ReBoot, it is still one of the best, most original, and re-watchable action/adventure cartoons ever made. It bears another viewing. Started in 1994, the original ReBoot concerned a group of binomes in the world of Mainframe. Guardian Bob and his allies, Dot Matrix and Enzo, protected Mainframe from the evil viruses Megabyte and Hexadecimal, as well as attacks from the unnamed User in the form of game uploads, which Bob must beat in order to save his online city. Before we journey back to Mainframe this month, let’s take a look at the most re-watchable shows from the decade of “extreme”, “talk to the hand”, and… “weasel?” Guaranteed, if you watch these again, you’ll see something you missed. (Note: While The Simpsons‘ presence was certainly felt in the ’90s, it was technically a creation of the ’80s, and has been intentionally left off this list.)

Animaniacs

Proof that this show is re-watchable, is the fact that people right now are re-watching it, and showing it to their own kids, while laughing at things only adults get. Running from ’93 to ’98, this show still holds up. What other kids cartoon parodies Apocalypse Now (complete with an animated Dennis Hopper), Goodfellas, and has two lab rats re-enacting a very specific set of Orson Welles’ commercial outtakes? Speaking of rats, even the spin-off Pinky and the Brain show won two Emmy awards. From an elderly squirrel mentioning Mickey Rooney, to making a joke about “busts,” this show has it all. In fact, Hulu and Steven Spielberg have mentioned they want to bring it back with new episodes in the future.

Batman: The Animated Series

The original run of this show was from ’92-’95 and may still be one of the best adaptations of a comic to date. Fresh after Tim Burton’s films, this show went on to set the groundwork for DC animation. Still eerie, drawn on black paper, and boasting voice talent who have since become legend, this show holds up. The show kept going under different names (The Adventures of Batman and Robin, The New Batman Adventures), and sometimes veered into the cheesy or silly, but the first four seasons are wonderful, dark, and exciting. People will always argue about their favorite live-action Batman and Joker, but nobody can deny the impact of the voices of Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill, respectively.

Beavis and Butthead

The Jane Austen-esque majestic adventures of two fanciful youths in the fictional Highland, Texas (probably close to Arlen) set the bar for gross animation to follow. The show involves two teenagers doing stupid and dangerous things essentially because they’re bored. (Later, Jackass would do it for real.) Created by Mike Judge (Office Space, Silicon Valley) in 1993, this show not only was the thing that made your parents shake their heads, but it got away with making fun of its own audience: Snickering punks watching MTV. Going back for a revisit, the show is still a satirical masterpiece of the times, much like Judge’s own film, Idiocracy. One thing that can always be said about the two characters, is they’re at least happy and confident in themselves.

Daria

A spin-off of Beavis and Butthead, this show finds the dry and cynical high-schooler and her friend Jane interacting with the silly world around her in the new setting of Lawndale. Started in 1997, this show is still popular now as it ever was. Going back, it’s easy to see why. Daria Morgendorffer is the antithesis of the superficial material girl. She was the monotone voice of a generation which couldn’t care less, and much like B&B, it also poked fun at the trendy MTV crowd watching it. But, the show also has heart in between the subtle jokes, and the payoff for watching the entire series is truly heartfelt and well-written for an animated comedy. This show could apply to any generation of teens.

Freakazoid!

Sadly, too short lived (’95-’97). Some of the funniest writing in any of the Spielberg/Warner Brothers cartoons. While many other shows of the time were much more popular, this had the quality over quantity. “Moron” the alien, Fanboy, and a cat psychiatrist, just to name a few of the memorable characters. Featuring the voices of Ed Asner (Elf), Ricardo Montalban (Wrath of Khan), Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale), and Kenneth Mars (Young Frankenstein) among many others, this two-season cartoon should still be going to this day, and will make you laugh out loud if you get a chance to re-watch it or visit it for the first time.

The Ren and Stimpy Show

Often terrifying and twisted, this cartoon showed us things we can’t unsee. Part of the original Nicktoons lineup (with Doug and Rugrats), this show was a reminder that the same company owned both Nickelodeon and MTV, as this cartoon found a home on both. It had a solid run from ’91 to ’96. Re-watching it as an adult, you’ll realize how truly brilliant and bizarre this show was, boasting every bodily fluid one could imagine. The ill-received 2003 reboot subtitled Adult Party Cartoon fizzled out with viewers after just a few episodes. The new series brought to light the fact that Ren and Stimpson were lovers, but the subtext from the original show is much more powerful. Especially in the episode, “Ren’s Pecs.”

South Park

Started in 1997 by the incomparable Trey Parker and Matt Stone, this show has never pandered, and never will. No celebrity or social movement is safe from this show. It continues to skewer everything and anything for a laugh. Considering they can make an episode in under a week, they can even make fun of things that happened days before an episode airs. The early seasons, while blocky in their animation, have plenty of classic jokes to laugh at. Twenty years strong, this show is still funny, whether you’re just finding out about Cartman’s anal probe, or re-meeting PC Principal. With no plans of stopping anytime soon, this show will continue to do what it wants, and make fun of anything in its way.

The Tick

Created by Ben Edlund (Supernatural), the show ran from ’94 to ’96 and easily boasts the greatest rogue’s gallery of all time: Chairface Chippendale, Dinosaur Neil, and The Man- Eating Cow (who got her own spin-off comic book) are just the tip of the iceberg. The adventures of The Tick and Arthur in “The City” have been recreated twice now in live action format, most recently on Amazon, starring Peter Serafinowicz as the titular hero. This cartoon has some of the funniest moments and lines ever to grace a Saturday morning superhero show like, “Sanity, you’re a madman!”, “I hate broccoli, and yet, in a certain sense, I am broccoli.” Who can forget the nigh-invulnerable Tick’s battle cry, “SPOON!” Watching it again, you’ll be surprised at how much was missed the first time. The Human Bullet cameos.

Tiny Toon Adventures

This started it all for the Spielberg/Warner Brothers ‘toon trend. This wonderful re-imagining of the classic Looney Toons cartoons created child versions of the classics and set them at the ACME Looniversity, where the original Toons are now professors. Beginning in 1990, it’s hard to believe this show ran only three seasons! They poked fun at MTV (while introducing a whole generation to the band They Might Be Giants), skewered Saturday Night Live with their own version: Weekday Afternoon Live (along with making fun of The Simpsons in the same episode), and even made a feature film: How I Spent My Summer Vacation which is the stuff of VHS legend, and parodies Deliverance of all things. Watch it again, and relive the magic.

X-Men

Mutants. People. People who hate mutants. A school. Most people are aware of the story at this point, but when this show premiered in 1992, it was something else. X-Men brought the thunder, plasma, and adamantium straight to your couch every Saturday morning. The school water fountain was always abuzz with talk on Monday. Truly faithful to its source material, it was like someone just threw the comics up on the TV. In many ways, this show was more faithful than some of the past live-action movies. Watch it again, and you’ll see. Especially the “Apocalypse” and “Dark Phoenix” story lines.

The 10 Funniest 80s Movies

This summer, one of the funniest 80s comedies is getting a makeover. Overboard, starring Anna Faris and Eugenio Derbez, is a re-imagining of the classic 1987 MGM movie of the same name. It’s about a poor, working-class mother of three, Kate (Faris) and a snobby, wealthy playboy, Leonardo (Derbez). After Leonardo takes a spill over the side of his luxury yacht and develops amnesia, Kate convinces him that they’re married. But, how long can she keep it up? The roles in the remake have been gender-swapped from the original, where Goldie Hawn played the wealthy elite, and Kurt Russell the working-class hero.

The original film was well-received, and the on-screen charisma of Russell and Hawn only made the movie shine brighter along with its funny premise, and even funnier execution. Along with this movie, the 1980s was chock full of some of the most iconic and memorable movies of all time, many of them comedies. So, let’s take a look at the funniest comedies of the decade. These are straight laugh-inducing. Watching these are guaranteed to make you smile. (Movies that lean a bit far into drama, action/adventure, or horror have been left out. These are straight comedies, or as close as can be).

Airplane! (1980)

Written and directed by Jim Abrahams and David Zucker (The Naked Gun), this mock-up of Airport 1975 (and every other famous movie of the time) will keep you laughing throughout. The deadpan performances of Robert Hays, Julie Hagerty, Leslie Nielsen, and Robert Stack only add to the zany things happening all around them. There are many instances that probably wouldn’t be considered PC (politically correct) in this day and age, but it doesn’t make them any less funny. In fact, it would be worth paying to see some younger folk’s reactions to a few of these jokes.

Caddyshack (1980)

The fact is, you don’t have to know or even enjoy the game of golf to think this movie is funny. Often criticized for being nothing more than a collection of sketches surrounding a loose plot, it doesn’t change the fact that it’s all hilarious. Directed by Harold Ramis, and co-written by Ramis (with Brian-Doyle-Murray), this film tells of the shenanigans of a group of caddies, golfers, the rich elite, a groundskeeper, and a gopher. There’s also a couple sub-plots that really don’t matter. With arguably the most well-known performances by Bill Murray, Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield, and Ted Knight, this movie has a lot of funny going for it, which is nice.

Clue (1985)

While many films on this list are quotable, this particular movie probably has the most quotable lines by sheer volume. All hilariously exchanged with quick-fire tenacity and timing by its amazing ensemble cast, including Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Christopher Lloyd, Micheal McKean, Martin Mull, Lesley Ann Warren, and Colleen Camp. Based on the popular board game, it’s also one of the best “whodunit” mysteries out there, often invoking Agatha Christie in certain parts. Directed by Jonathan Lynn (My Cousin Vinny), who collaborated with John Landis on the script, this movie is great for a group viewing. Word is, Hasbro has been trying to get a reboot off the ground for a few years with FOX and Ryan Reynolds.

Coming to America (1988)

Featuring director John Landis and star Eddie Murphy’s second successful collaboration of the decade, after Trading Places, this movie might be the funny pinnacle point for both. Prince Akeem wants to find a queen. One he can respect for her independence and intelligence. So he travels to Queens, New York (obviously), and forgoes his pampered lifestyle in order to meet a girl who enjoys him for him, much to the chagrin of his friend Semmi (Arsenio Hall) and the King, himself (James Earl Jones). This film actually started the prosthetic-driven Murphy films of the 1990s in which he plays multiple characters. A hit with critics and audiences alike, this film has grossed triple it’s estimated budget at the time — and with good reason.

Ghostbusters (1984)

This film was not only a comedic hit of the time, but it inspired a small phenomenon for paranormal investigations and eliminations involving cartoons, toys, a drink mix, toothpaste, fried pies, etc. Directed by Ivan Reitman and based on a story by Dan Aykroyd, and written by Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, this movie concerned three scientists (Aykroyd, Ramis, and Bill Murray) and a working-class spiritual layman (Ernie Hudson) hunting and trapping paranormal entities in New York City. Also boasting wonderful performances by Sigourney Weaver, Annie Potts, Rick Moranis, and William Atherton, this movie is hilarious. Even the scares are treated with a smirk. The original is still the best. Watch it on Neflix, along with the 1989 sequel, Ghostbusters 2.

I’m Gonna Git You Sucka (1988)

A parody of blaxploitation films of the 1970s, starring, written, and directed by Keenan Ivory Wayans. A young hero (Wayans) returns to his corrupt neighborhood and brings together every famous local hero from the past (Bernie Casey, Issac Hayes, Jim Brown) to fight against the evil Mr. Big (John Vernon). At times very over-the-top and slap-sticky (much like Airplane! or The Naked Gun), this film also has some of the funniest lines of the time. While the more recent Black Dynamite fully emulates the 1970s style of film making to comedic effect, this one just laughs at it, along with making fun of many action-hero conventions of the time. Also, Bernie Casey could recite children’s limericks and it would still be bad-ass.

National Lampoon’s Vacation (1983)

Again, directed by Harold Ramis and based on a story by John Hughes about his own family trip to Disneyworld. This role by Chevy Chase is equally as iconic as his role in Caddyshack, according to many. It concerns a “great American family road trip” which is completely botched from the start. Anyone with a family (which is most people) can identify with this movie. Beverly D’Angelo plays the mother opposite Chase’s father of the Griswold family. Anthony Michael Hall and Dana Barron play the kids, Rusty and Audrey. It’s a road movie. It’s a family movie. It’s a friggin’ funny movie.

The Money Pit (1986)

Starring Tom Hanks and Shelley Long, this remake of Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House (1948) is a laugh riot. Some of the best slapstick and physical comedy of the times. Anyone who’s ever bought or rented a terrible place to live can relate to the premise of a young couple who get a house too good to be true (because it is.) A very quick romp, and while it may get serious for a brief time, the laughs fully outweigh it. Available on Netflix streaming right now, if you have an hour and a half and need a guaranteed laugh.

This Is Spinal Tap (1984)

The mocku- sorry! I meant Rockumentary about Britain’s now-legendary band, Spinal Tap. If you haven’t seen this, you’re frankly doing yourself a disservice. Even if you don’t like rock ‘n’ roll, this movie is hysterical. The improvised delivery of Micheal McKean, Christopher Guest, and Harry Shearer as the infamous band’s members has yet to be matched in any other film of it’s type. Even when this movie is silly, it’s always played straight, and that is why it still holds up now. Directed by Rob Reiner, this movie made the “mockumentary” format famous and its influences are still felt in Guest’s own future work (Waiting for Guffman, A Mighty Wind) and the recent Taran Killam film, Killing Gunther.

Weekend At Bernie’s (1989)

Why this film hasn’t been turned into a Broadway musical by now is anyone’s guess. To be perfectly blunt, this movie is funny because it COULD NOT be made, now. It is very sick. But, it’s also a perfect commentary on wealthy socialite narcissism, and makes fun of corporate greed. Starring Andrew McCarthy and Jonathan Silverman as two eager businessmen, and Terry Kiser as the title character, Bernie, and directed by Ted Kotcheff (First Blood) there are scenes which are ridiculously funny, but also completely macabre if you really stop and think. In fact, taken out of context of the plot, there are scenes which are downright horrific. But, that’s the brilliance of it. Oh, and don’t worry about the sequel. Really. Don’t.
