John Williams to write the theme for Solo: A Star Wars Story

John Williams, who has composed the music for all eight of the main Star Wars films (Michael Giacchino composed the music for Rogue One) will write the theme for Solo: A Star Wars Story, he revealed to Variety. The score for the film is being composed by John Powell.

The 85-year-old music legend said: “The present plan is that I’m writing a theme for Han Solo, and John Powell is going to write the score, which he’ll do brilliantly. His assignment is something I’m very happy about. What I will do is offer this to John, and to [director] Ron Howard, and if all parties are happy with it, then I will be happy… John [Powell] will complete the score. He will write all the rest of the themes and all of the other material, which I’m going to be very anxious to hear.”

It was announced last July that Powell (Bourne films, ShrekKung Fu Panda films, How to Train Your Dragon films) was scoring the upcoming Han Solo film. “The untitled Han Solo movie will be scored in the style of the original Star Wars movies but retain Powell’s distinctive voice,” Lucasfilm said back then.

Solo: A Star Wars Story features Hail, Caesar‘s Alden Ehrenreich as Han, with Atlanta‘s Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian and The Force Awakens‘ Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca. Woody Harrelson is playing Han’s mentor, a man by the name of Beckett, while Game of Thrones‘ Emilia Clarke, Westworld‘s Thandie Newton, and Fleabag‘s Phoebe Waller-Bridge also star.

In the wake of the departure of directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller from the upcoming Solo: A Star Wars Story, Lucasfilm hired director Ron Howard (A Beautiful MindThe Da Vinci Code) to take their place. It is unknown how credit will be divided for the finished film, as at least 3/4s of it was already shot when Howard took over.

Solo: A Star Wars Story is coming to theaters on May 25, 2018.

Event Report: Jurassic Park Live in Toronto

Back in October, we reported on a fascinating event staged by The Toronto Symphony Orchestra in Toronto and hosted by the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts, a special salute to the composer John Williams in the form of the orchestra mounting a live performance of the score to Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, staged in front of a screening of the film itself. Outside of being a wonderful reminder of just how good a picture the underrated second “Potter” movie is, the event hammered home the fact that Williams is one of the greatest composers in film history. And judged solely on his impact on pop culture – Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Superman, Jaws et al – maybe the best.

Nowhere was this cold, hard truth more potently presented than last night in Toronto, when the Sony Centre presented the alarmingly on-point Motion Picture Symphony Orchestra’s performance and screening of Steven Spielberg’s majestic and now-iconic dinosaur sci-fi adventure epic Jurassic Park, a still thundering movie that features one of Williams’ most skin-prickling scores. Despite the cultural and franchise import of the 1993 original film, Jurassic Park is an important piece of the Spielberg/Williams puzzle (Spielberg having had used Williams for almost every single one of his key pictures since 1975’s Jaws) in that at the dawn of the ’90s, it seemed as if Spielberg was down and out. His glory days of endless blockbuster ground-breaking seemed cooked after the tired Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and the flop of the misguided Hook. But taking Michael Crichton’s prehistoric Westworld novel and adding his unique warmth and sense of humor and skill at mounting set-pieces (not to mention those cutting-edge special effects), Spielberg had a huge smash on his hands, a feat made even more stunning with the release of his Oscar-winning Schindler’s List that same year.

And with Jurassic Park, Williams would create what might be his most romantic and mythical theme since 1978’s Superman: The Movie. The rest of the score is equally deft and incredibly complicated in its orchestration. Seeing the full orchestra dramatically perform every part of it in front of that giant screen once more exemplified just how intricate that music is.

The show – which ran last night and repeats again tonight at 7:30pm – was a sold-out affair, but unlike the “Potter” performance, the audience cosplay element didn’t factor into the experience, save for a few scattered Jurassic Park T-shirts and one dude dressed in an inflatable T-Rex outfit. No, the crowd gathered last night to watch – and listen – to the film, were mostly cineastes, a generation of lovers of the film, many of whom brought their own children out to see the picture that had such an impact on them 25 years ago. And from the first moments of the movie, with the Motion Picture Symphony Orchestra dragging their bows across strings, plucking harps and pushing air through reeds, the dread and wonder of Jurassic Park was palpable. And scary. Jurassic Park isn’t often talked about as a horror film and I suppose its not, but those harrowing moments of dino attacks are still spine-shaking, most nightmarishly that brutal T-Rex attack (that moves in waves) and the raptor/kitchen climax. During these stretches, the audience becomes fully immersed, their senses moving from screen to stage endlessly, isolating sounds and instruments they failed to hear in the cinema and at home and actually seeing the musician sculpting those notes in front of them. Just as effective were the moments of wonder, the first appearance of the dinos at the park, the flying cranes at the end and every other instance where Williams’ lush, melancholy and heart-pounding theme is played. Truly one of the most beautiful scores ever committed to a piece of fantastic cinema and conductor Evan Mitchell held it all together, his hands swaying and adding that extra layer of grandeur to an already majestic event.

These performances mark the first time the full film has been screened with a full orchestra. If you’re in Toronto and are an ardent Williams fan, you cannot afford to miss the second show tonight. Even if you have a casual interest in film, this is still an experience that will notably deepen your appreciation of the relationship between sound and image in cinema.

★★★★ ½

Over the years, the rise and fall of Tonya Harding has evolved from tabloid fodder to a punch line to the stuff of half-remembered legend. I, Tonya presents the unconventional Olympic figure skater’s stranger-than-fiction story with balance, nuance, and affection—but not quite redemption—for the film’s titular tragic hero.

I, Tonya chronicles 40 years in the life of Harding (Margot Robbie), a poor, brash skater raised by an abusive mom, who first made history by becoming the first American woman to land a triple axel in competition. The film uses a variety of narrative devices, including an “irony-free” and “wildly contradictory” mockumentary format, to frame the narrative. Sequential scenes are interrupted by interview footage of Harding and her inner circle in the present day, as they recall their versions of the events depicted. This motif—along with moments in which characters in the main story line break the fourth wall to give their two cents—successfully creates a delicate balance between dark comedy and brutal sincerity. After some of the film’s most gut-wrenching moments, a character in an interview segment will chime in with a deadpan one-liner. For example, after Harding’s chain-smoking mother, LaVona Golden (Allison Janney), accidentally stabs her daughter, present-day Golden responds, “What family doesn’t have its ups and downs?”

On top of establishing such a complex tone, the film has the task of being an Olympic-level sports movie on an indie budget—and to that end, it succeeds commendably. Director Craig Gillespie and cinematographer Nicolas Karakatsanis choreograph dramatic, sweeping camerawork to capture Harding’s athleticism and prowess in her routines. While Robbie did learn to ice-skate for the film, her face is imposed on a double à la Black Swan for the more taxing technical moves. This effect is noticeable at times, but it works for the most part, allowing Robbie’s facial expressions to coexist with the skating so the audience gets a complete picture of Harding as a performer. The meticulous recreation of Harding’s routines is matched by the reproduction of her ensembles, topped with spot-on makeup from Deborah La Mia Denaver and hair by Oscar winner Adruitha Lee. Denaver’s subtle, low-budget old-age makeup is worth applauding, as it’s so easy to get wrong and can easily distract from an actor’s performance.

While the film’s technical elements are harmonious, its success comes down to the performances of Robbie, Janney, and Sebastian Stan, the latter of whom plays Harding’s ex-husband, Jeff Gillooly. These actors have the difficult task of portraying real, still-living people, and showing their troubling faults alongside their virtues. A consistent, talented performer, Janney knocks it out of the park as Golden, who is callous, irredeemable, and riotously blunt. Meanwhile, Stan’s ability to make Gillooly seem loving and meek just as easily as violent and controlling muddies the audience’s ability to decipher whether his or Harding’s version of events is the truth.

For her first role as a leading lady, Robbie took her fate into her own hands to show what she’s capable of as an actress. The Aussie found the movie’s script herself, then negotiated to both star in and produce the film. Robbie portrays Harding as a broken but relentless woman who, though she was consistently dismissed by the media, the world of figure skating, and the American public, fought back against the rigid gender norms and classism in skating.

Yet for all her appeal as a sort of feminist icon, Harding isn’t totally let off the hook for her role in her own misfortunes. Robbie’s Harding sneers and scoffs, refusing to accept responsibility for failures that were completely within her control. She bad-mouths Nancy Kerrigan while claiming she’d never hurt her “friend.” Robbie captures the self-pity, insecurity, and desperation that radiated off Harding and made her not just unlikeable, but an easy cultural punching bag.

I, Tonya lags when the consequences of “the incident” become too depressing to intersperse with comedy, but the film ultimately succeeds at pulling back the curtain to reveal the person behind the punch line. While the movie might not change everyone’s opinion of Harding, it contextualizes and humanizes her, revealing a flawed but sympathetic woman still fighting for her place in the world.

Syfy announces Krypton premiere date

Syfy today announced the Krypton premiere date – March 21, 2018.

Set two generations before the destruction of the legendary Man of Steel’s home planet, Krypton follows Superman’s grandfather (Cameron Cuffe, The Halcyon) — whose House of El was ostracized and shamed — as he fights to redeem his family’s honor and save his beloved world from chaos. The Seg-El name is both a nod to Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel and a reference to John Byrne’s 1980s miniseries, “The World of Krypton.” Cameron Cuffe is set to play Seg-El along with Georgina Campbell as Lyta Zod.

Krypton stars Cameron Cuffe, Georgina Campbell, Elliot Cowan, Ann Ogbomo, Rasmus Hardiker, Wallis Day, Aaron Pierre, Ian McElhinney, and Shaun SIpos.

Based on DC characters, Krypton is executive produced by David S. Goyer (Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, The Dark Knight trilogy). Cameron Welsh (Ash vs Evil Dead) will serve as executive producer and showrunner.

Sony Pictures pushes back Alpha and Goosebumps 2

Sony Pictures has pushed back the release dates for both the Ice Age-set drama Alpha and the Goosebumps sequel, according to Deadline.

Alpha, which was scheduled to open in theaters on March 2, 2018, will now come to theaters on September 14, 2018. That’s the same date as 20th Century Fox’s The Darkest Minds and MGM’s Fighting with My Family.

Kodi Smit-McPhee (X-Men: Apocalypse, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) stars in the film alongside Natassia Malthe (Elektra, This Means War), Leonor Varela (Blade II, Marvel’s Agents of Shield), Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson (Game of Thrones, Atomic Blonde), Mercedes de la Zerda (War for the Planet of the Apes, Hemlock Grove), and Jens Hultén (Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation). The film is directed by Albert Hughes (Menace II Society, The Book of Eli), written by Daniele Sebastian Wiedenhaupt and produced by Albert Hughes and Andrew Rona.

The Goosebumps sequel, to be directed by Ari Sandel (The DUFF), will be moving from September 21, 2018 to October 12, 2021. That moves it away from The House with a Clock in Its Walls, which also stars Jack Black. It will now face Lionsgate’s Hellfest and Universal’s First Man, which are also opening on October 12.

The first Goosebumps made $150 million on a $58 million budget, and hit #1 on the sales charts when it was released on home video. Since there are 62 books in the original “Goosebumps” series, the filmmakers will have plenty of material to wade through in order to craft a story.

Based on Scholastic’s worldwide best-selling book series, with over 400 million copies in print, Goosebumps starred Jack Black (School of Rock) as “Goosebumps” author R.L. Stine, along with Dylan Minnette (Prisoners), Ryan Lee (Super 8) and Odeya Rush (The Giver).
